The 2004 hit comedy Mean Girls, brought laughter and tears to our eyes, and quickly became one of the most popular chick flicks of all times. If you've ever seen the movie then you definitely know the phrase, “you can’t sit with us,” made famous by Gretchen Wieners of, "The Plastics." A group of snobby girlsb****es that ruled their high school is now admired by most, if not all teenagers across the United States. This 5 word phrase will live on forever.
Fast forward 11 years, and this famous phrase is making a comeback. “You can’t sit with us” is now pictured on beanies, tank tops, t-shirts, jackets, twitter pictures, and just ... everywhere! If you haven't guessed already, I have a f*#!ing problem with it. What is so great about that phrase? It promotes segregation, cliques, and girls being complete a**holes to each other.
Why does it always seem like girls are most attracted to the mean and materialistic?! Let me give you an example: When you first watch Mean Girls who is the one girl you want to be? Regina George — the biggest b**** in the school. She’s not any prettier than Cady Heron, Gretchen Wieners or Karen Smith, so what is so great about her, aka Caesar? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar. Brutus is just as smart as Caesar. People totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar ... !
I don’t get it. Are girls just attracted to the fierce and b*!#@y?
To the girls who are still all about the cliques, let me tell you, it will get you nowhere in life. Popularity is not something to strive for, but rather being a genuine person is, which is often one of the hardest and most challenging things to achieve. Ladies, we need to change. We need to respect others, and in turn, we will be more respected by society. We are not "The Plastics."
So please do us all a favor and stop wearing those “you can’t sit with us" shirts. Instead, wear one that says “come sit with us.” You can be just as fierce as Regina George by using kindness, and you'll probably end up more popular than her in the end.
