Campus Hot Spots: Volume 1

There's no denying that Western has some of the most beautiful, distinctive campuses in the state of Michigan. From the many hills that await you in the Valleys to the wonderful, rich history that lies within our East Campus, there is so much to discover and encounter when you visit this great university. So much so that it is only appropriate to highlight some of the "campus hot spots" that are around WMU. Due to there being an abundance of cool locations - and ensuring that this short article doesn't become the equivalent of a senior thesis paper-this topic will be broken up into volumes, so be on the lookout for future editions!

In the meantime, enjoy the first four Campus Hot Spots!

1. Miller Fountain Plaza: As a freshman when I first came to WMU, Miller fountain was arguably my favorite spot to hang by when on campus. While Western may not have the traditional "quad" layout, this very well could be considered our equivalent of one. Besides, what's not to love about this place? Along with serving as a nice meeting and hangout place in between classes (or even a nice weekend), the beauty of the trees embellishing the area and the infamous Miller fountain, this area certainly captures the essence and beauty of WMU. Nighttime is even more special, as lights are decked out around the fountain and can make even an ordinary night much more magical.

2. Bernhard Center: This building, commonly known as the BHC for short, arguably serves as one of the most busiest and well-known around campus. Not only does it serve as the meeting place for many of our RSO's (Registered Student Organizations), but also houses it's own Café and lounge areas, which makes for the perfect place to relax after class or have a good study session. Students can also take care of business matters- whether it is updating your student ID, checking in on your financial aid, buying books at textbook alley, or even typing up a paper in the computer lab. The BHC have plenty to offer, and if you're lucky you may even spot Dr. Dunn himself passing by- so be sure to ask for a picture with him!

3. Miller Auditorium/Gilmore Theatre Complex: While these buildings are technically two separate venues, both are right beside each other and share a common purpose. Miller Auditorium is where you'll find some very popular acts - from traveling Broadway shows such as "Wicked" to the Blue Man Group and even the Kalamazoo Orchestra - performing in the venue to the applause of many Kalamazoo locals and WMU the students themselves. The auditorium is also home to Miller Movie Night, a monthly tradition hosted by our Campus Activities Board, in which WMU students get to vote on a movie which gets projected onto a large screen in Miller; the night also features many prizes and games in the lead up to the film showing. Meanwhile over at the Gilmore Theatre Complex, you can treat yourself to a student-performed production, which is produced by WMU's theater department. Between these two venues, there's so much art to enjoy, so why not have a fun night out at the theatre?

4. Sprau Tower: The tallest building at WMU, George Sprau Tower serves as the offices for many of the colleges professors. However students also utilize this building, particularly to grab a quick bite to eat at the towers café on the bottom floor. Many also like to use the building to study on the top floor, which offers an amazing view of the campus and makes you appreciate WMU so much more. As such a familiar landmark on campus, Sprau Tower doesn't disappoint.

Stay tuned for more Campus Hot Spots in the near future!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
