13 Things You'll Understand if You've Been a Camp Counselor

It's summer time! That means it's camp time too, and if you're in high school or college, chances are you've been or are currently a camp counselor!

1. That initial gut reaction, pre-camp

Wondering whether or not you should fake an illness to get out of volunteering for camp. Again. (What, only 7 years in a row?)

2. So many names. So many faces. No way you'll remember them all.

Luckily, that's what nametags are for.

3. Camp food: a love-hate relationship

Pizza, burgers, popcorn, chocolate and all of the things your parents rationed for you as a kid.

4. Is someone dying or did they get stung by a bee?

If a camper is screaming bloody murder, it's likely they could've experienced a minor injury. Candy and video games tend to cheer them right up.

5. Kids will lose it over the baby shark song.

Baby shark, do do, do da do..... if you're interested in learning, lmk and your child will be satisfied for YEARS.

6. Be prepared to get called anything from mommy to buttface.

Some kids are really sweet and adorable. Others, not so much.

7. Getting practically no sleep.

Realizing you're getting kind of old when "Quiet Time" is around 10:30 p.m. and you wish you were in bed hours ago. And wanting to crawl back into your sleeping bag when the bell rings at 8.

8. If you have to sing one more camp song you might actually throw up.

Oh, you guys want the frog song? Okay, we can sing that right after the pajamas, Superman, and MILK song.

9. S'mores always seem like a good idea.

Until you give someone their 10th s'more and only realize it was that much when they start dancing and jumping on the picnic table.

10. How do kids have this much energy? Are they like this all the time?

Dear parents, how do you do it???

11. Finally getting some alone time on the lake.

And by alone time I mean canoeing with 3 campers. And swimming with the other 2. And making sure that little boy puts on a life jacket because he's scared of the water.

12. Wiping away the tears that escape when you have to drive back home.

Sure, camp may be exhausting, but it's so much fun and so worth your time! What better way to spend your weekend? It' okay to be a little sad to leave your campers.

13. Planning all of the fun games and activities for next year, because you're addicted to being a camp counselor!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
