The So-Called "Tolerant" Generation

It's a Lie...

If anyone has ever spent any time at all on a college campus you will hear many college congratulate themselves on being so tolerant. The increasing density of many individuals coming out with various sexual identities has lead to this trend of tolerance. I called it a trend for a reason. The direct definition of tolerance is being able to withstand a certain lifestyle or opinion even if that opinion conflicts with personal beliefs or opinions. I am so sick of hearing about how "tolerant" my student body is, while being on the inside I see the hate and intolerance every day. Tolerance is total bullshit, especially within the ones preaching it.

Tolerance is healthy and it's what aids us in having healthy discussions and debates on things that can be a little touchy. I would be proud of my generation if they could actually do this, they can't. My generation is tolerant as long as you agree with their beliefs or don't hurt their feelings too bad. My generation preaches tolerance but then persecutes people who believe conservatively or differently than the mass. Take the current presidential candidates for instance, Bernie supporters say they are so tolerant and peaceful...but I have witnessed name calling from those same Bernie supporters when they run into someone who pulls for another candidate. We accuse one another of being, "racist", "sexist", "too political" or "too judgmental". The oversensitive individuals I share this campus with are so afraid of stepping on toes or offending each other that they fail to stand up for things that truly matter.

Tolerance is good, but so is standing up for your beliefs and opinions and not having to worry about getting attacked for them. The worst types of people in this world are the ones who think people can do whatever they want and you can't say anything about it. You most certainly can say whatever you want about it, in a tasteful way that doesn't berate the individual. Passiveness has never gotten anything done and I refuse to be an individual who constantly gets hurt or angry about other's actions or beliefs, no matter how much they differ from mine...that's true tolerance.

This generation suppresses individuals that might not agree with the mass opinion. This generation hates on young people who practice more conservative beliefs and don't accept the general thinking of the mass. If you don't believe me, just try coming up to someone of this generation and saying something that completely goes against acceptance of anything and everything, I can guarantee you will be called a multitude of names. This generation demonstrates this so-called "tolerance" and it's a complete lie.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
