The common stigma behind makeup is that women—or men in some cases—use it as a tool to hide their true appearance. Why do men care about the amount of makeup women wear? Because they feel they're being lied to. Why do other women care? Because they think it's pointless and purely applied to excite men. When will more people understand that women don't necessarily wear makeup for the sake of others? Of course, plenty of women refuse to admit that that is part of it, but on the other hand, women love to feel confident and sometimes using makeup is not only the most convenient way to feel that, but also a passion for some.
Makeup isn't solely a form of cover up, some men and women are so passionate about it that it's become an art form. Whether you are studying cosmetology as a trade, are a successful makeup guru, or are someone who loves playing with makeup, you are the definition of an artist, despite what people may think. A makeup artist's canvas is one's face and his or her paintbrush consists of the countless makeup he or she has. People forget that if it wasn't for makeup artists, we wouldn't have such an appreciation for special effects makeup, specifically used in film. If we have access to makeup in our reality why leave it merely to imagination?
The problem with makeup is that while boosting self-confidence it also conveys insecurity. Most men say they prefer natural beauties without realizing that even these women throw on some eyeliner and maybe a light contour here and there. I don't want to say a full on natural beauty is a rare breed these days, but they can be hard to come by especially within these new generations. Besides, do you really think your fantasy girl or boy would wake up next to you in the morning with that divine face? Dream on.
Women criticize those who wear, what they define as, "too much makeup" because they feel they should let their inner beauty shine through. Let's get one thing straight, sometimes it's hard letting inner beauty stand out when our outer appearance is the first impression most men and women receive from us. Needless to say, yes women use makeup to enhance their physical appearance, but that doesn't mean it's always for the same purpose (specifically the purpose that involves impressing others). We don't care whether we should or shouldn't wear it, it's our prerogative.
