It's beginning that time of year again when the air becomes crisper, leaves begin to fall, sweater weather is reinstated, and pumpkin spice galore monopolizes the food and beverage industry. It's also a time when many decide what they will be for Halloween. Halloween is all about going over the top to dress up like superhero, or some other hyper sexualized member of society. For some, it's a night with no boundaries in terms of what can be worn. This year though, society might have reached a controversial boundary.
This past year, the world has followed Caitlyn Jenner on her transformation into the outside world. Some criticized, while others glorified her strength to publicize such transformation. The 20/20: Bruce Jenner- The Interview with Diane Sawyer has been one of the most watched episodes when Bruce first exclaimed his true inner self of the now Caitlyn. The world then received the revelations of her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair. Within the first 24 hours, her story had over 46 million views online, and over 738,000 copies purchased. Caitlyn Jenner was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs, which sparked great controversy on courage to which ESPN responded by stating:
The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action. Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue. At all times, there are many worthy candidates. This year, we are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance (Huffingtonpost.com).
Much discussion has been sparked about transgender equality since then. Much progress has been made in terms of public support and more understanding towards what it means to be transgender. Recently though, Spirit Halloween decided to release a new costume blaspheming Caitlyn's now iconic cover. To some yes, it is just a costume, but what they fail to see is who this cover inspired. In her acceptance speech for courage award, Caitlyn stated:
If you want to call me names, make jokes and doubt my intentions, go ahead, because the reality is I can take it,but for thousands of kids out there coming to terms with the reality of who they are, they shouldn't have to take it. (ESPN.com)
Caitlyn brought an issue that was, for the most part, in the dark to the surface of society. She gave others hope who's light might have felt it was almost burnt out. This costume is a mockery of all the progress that has been made. The company failed to see that the people still struggling might feel pushed down again by this costume. This horror of a costume Spirit Halloween is producing fails to respect the trans community. It fails them the dignity they deserve and have rightfully should have been endowed for some time now. This is not a costume, this is the wardrobe of a bully. Caitlyn Jenner has been a much celebrated figure in today's society, but this costume is not the way to do it!
