Bye Bye Roomie

Sometimes your roommate leaves you before you want them to leave, but that's okay.

College: a time where you might have to adjust getting used to a roommate, or at least cohabiting with someone who is not a direct relative. For some of us, this is more difficult, either because of who you are as a person, or because of the person/people you are destined to live with. This side is, of course, not a lot of fun, and it can make your years in college more difficult than it needs to be.

In other cases, you make the best of it, your roommate becomes your best friend. Maybe you knew them before hand, so you have some history. Maybe you don't but just by the technology that we have, you have been able to establish a connection over the internet before even meeting face-to-face. This, this is what you want, and luckily I have been fortunate enough to have multiple experiences of this.

From the first moment we met, I knew we were meant to be friends. We got over that initial awkwardness that faces people when they first meet, in a matter of minutes. The second day we were together, we already had inside jokes, we had our song that always make me smile when I hear it, because it brings me back to those first moments we had together.

As time went on, we kept talking and spending more time together. We made more and more memories, whether it was just by ourselves in our room, or with our friends, who all merged together. There didn't seem to be a separation of our lives. We are from different parts of the world, but our lives could not have lined up more perfectly.

To the roommate who left me early, I love you. Of course, you are leaving for a very good reason, and I will always wish you the best of happiness in the future. I hope that we keep talking, and I'm pretty sure that will be the case, no matter how far apart we will be. We might not be able to Skype or text all the time, but I know that I will always be able to talk with you when something goes wrong or when something goes so right.

I will always hold our midnight conversations, our random sing-a-longs to our childhood music, the stupid jokes and everything else that built up our relationship so near and dear to my heart. They will be some of my favorite memories of my college years.

One day, I will have you standing by my side when I get married, you won't just be one of my college friends, but one of my college roommates, which means just a bit more. One day, I will tell these ridiculous stories of my college roommates to my children and they will say, "Mom, that's not true." And you know what I will say? "Yeah? Well, then go ask your 'Aunt', they will tell you it's true." I plan on having you be a part of the rest of my life.

I have been so fortunate that my roommates have been the sweetest people, the people I always want by my side in the worst and best of times. I want them to always know first what is going on in my life. I have fallen in love with my roommmates.

I miss them when they leave, but I cannot stop them, because it's for the best, and who would I be if I didn't want that for them?

Thank you for being my best friends and my best memories of college.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
