Who is becky with the good hair? Who is that girl that drove a deep wedge into Beyonce's and Jay Z's marriage? What is Beyonce's new album about? When Beyonce released her album titled "Lemonade," it was largely speculated that Jay Z had cheated on Beyonce. Her album had revolved around the sense that betrayal occurred in their relationship and it is the emotions she goes through. Each song seems to dig deeper into the issue that was in their marriage.
It starts with the song "Pray You Catch Me." This may be referring to the fact that she suspects that he is cheating. She prays that he confronts her and is no longer something that she may have made up or been dreaming. Each layer of this album peels back on the curtain that has separated their relationship from the public eye. We see Beyonce in a new raw form, her love stripped before us. She shows depression, anger, distance, and then forgiveness all in one album. It is something that is not seen often in music now a days. Music can sometimes get sucked into generic "love," win the girl over, kind of stuff. However, Beyonce takes this "love" one step further with her relationship and how it came apart, but she brought it back together. The anger part is personally my favorite. She sings "Sorry" which has a kind of bad feel to it. She does not apologize for her anger towards him. Also this song is where the Becky with the good hair came from. She states that he better call Becky with good hair cause she is no longer there for him to call upon. Beyonce's fans swarmed any assumed "Becky." Next is "6 Inch" where she talks about maybe herself getting away from him. She replaces her anger with a kind of "I'll show you" attitude. These two song can make you feel like a boss when you are walking to class or about to take a test.
However, like her emotions, the album moves along in correlation. She does have song about her father and his affair with another woman. She recalls the past and how she says that she is cursed with two-faced lovers. This kind of country infused with pop song brings light to the fact that she has dealt with cheaters before. The next song is "Love Drought." It probably brings up the fact that she misses him, she misses the person who she thought would spend the rest of her life with. On of the lyrics states that 9/10 times she knows that he is trying, but 10/10 times she is human. This line may represent she does want to forgive him, but is having trouble doing so. She states they if they came back together they would end this love drought, but she might not be ready to forgive him.
Another one of my favorite songs that represents a change in her emotions and their relationship is "Forward ft. James Blake." This song sort of symbolizes that they are moving past the affair, they will continue their relationship. She states that she has waded through the waters, that she is bullet proof, and the tears will fall away. This song is a kind of triumphant power song that symbolizes Beyonce's forgiveness for Jay Z and the power of their relationship. The last song on the track is the much popular song released before the album dropped called "Formation." This catchy song may just be that her family is back in formation, and this song references her roots of Alabama and Louisiana. Jay Z, Blue Ivy, and her are one family again, it also celebrates their culture and who they are. This album is one of a kind that pulls back the curtain on their hidden relationship and seems to walk the listener through each step, emotion, and action Beyonce felt and did. All I have to say is that Queen B did it again; wow, this album is a legend and worth spending money over.
