Why art?
When I was a child, I always had the drive to be creative and make things. Art has and will be my outlet for the rest of my life. I love it, and it has worked out for me. Going into college, I knew I wanted to do something along the lines of art. I'm now finishing out my freshman year as a Graphic Design major. Although we're in a changing time and we should accept others for their talents, some people like to discourage art majors.
"What if you're an art major, but you aren't good at art?"
When I tell people that I'm a Graphic Design major, the usual response is a laugh or an assumption that I'm lazy or stupid. It even goes as far as people asking me if I do drugs, because of my choice in major. I've felt judgment from many people for being an art major and my choice to pursue a future in the fine arts. I've heard a variety of insults and read thousands of articles detailing why "art" is a waste of a college degree and why artists are stupid for making this decision. This came to a shock to me when I came to college, because I've never been judged for art before. In my opinion, talent should never Apparently, art is the laughing stock at any given university, go figure.
"You know art really isn't a career, right?"
While this does get to me sometimes, insults will never stop me from pursuing a career in something I love. Art has been something that has helped me through good times and bad times. In a world where I can't always voice my opinion, my art speaks it for me. People go through their lives with a job they hate. I will never be content until I have a career, not a job. A career in art is my dream career. I will not take anything less, no matter the judgment.
When I was young, my great-grandmother taught me everything I knew about art. She taught me how to understand art as another part of yourself. I always knew I wanted to be an artist because of her. When she passed away, I was left with a majority of her art supplies. Her easel, dried with paint strokes and water stains, sits in the corner of my art room. Sometimes I like to think back to when I was a kid in her sunroom; we would paint side by side as the light shown through the room. She would never judge my work or my ideas, even though I was like 6 years old and I knew they were bad. In my mind, she is my biggest motivation to make it in the world.
