Going to a university where engineering, agriculture and nursing are predominately popular among majors, business tends to be overlooked. I have no problem with any of those majors. In fact, I am glad that they chose to take a path that is unique to them. However, I do have a problem when people think that business is a useless major and are just taking it to get some type of degree. This is a stereotype that tends to be known as the “easy route."
Just look around; all the clothes you have, all the food you eat, all the places you shop, these are all businesses! There are infinite amounts of businesses, and these cannot be run by someone that has no knowledge of how a business works. This is why business majors are so important and are virtually in every college and university to some extent. I think that is very important that you have some sort of drive and ambition if you are going to major in business and want to be successful some day. Whether it be becoming an entrepreneur to a company or working your way up the totem pole and becoming a high up position in an already existing company, these things are important. If you don’t have any plan or drive to do anything, then yes, I agree that you wasted tens of thousands of dollars on a useless piece of paper.
This is why when I get asked what can you even do with your degree, I typically respond with a simplistic one-word answer, “Anything.” It is limitless in the things I can do with this degree the rest of my life. Along with the ideas I want to convey to the rest of the world, I hope someday to make an impact on our society.
Personally, I am majoring in Business Management and minoring in Psychology, while working on my Sales/Marketing certificate. These are all broads fields, but I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I possibly can within these four short years of college while gaining real world experience. This way, by the time I graduate, I will hopefully get hired by a company that I can share my values and passions with, while bringing as much as I can to the table to contribute. Whatever it may be in the business field. marketing, finance, accounting, management or international business are all key factors to making a company run smoothly and help change the world.
While some people think of businessmen or businesswomen trying to take every last cent out of your pockets or being greedy workaholics, think again. There is so much more to consider because these college students will be affecting our future generations and could possibly make an impact on the world forever.
