The first day of school my senior year I sat in study hall, and there sat a girl wearing polka dot shoes, tribal print leggings, and a cross print shirt. I saw two girls whispering. “The clip in her hair is from elementary school,” one girl said. “She’d probably be better off if her mom still picked out her clothes for her,” replied the other girl. Overhearing this conversation about the freshman was bothering me. The girls sat there for the 42 minutes talking about her and picking things out that were apparently “wrong.” Towards the end of the period, the one girl took a picture and sent a Snapchat. The bell rang. The girls followed behind the freshmen laughing and pointing, and then they followed her down the hallway taking pictures and laughing at her.
Walking through the halls of Liberty High, I constantly hear people bashing other people’s appearance. Since when did it become societies place to judge people’s private business?
There's a difference between public and private lives. The way people act or dress shouldn't be a concern for the public. If they want to act in a certain manner, let them. They aren't bothering anyone, so it doesn’t concern anyone else. In their everyday lives people continuously feel the need to judge, but why? Do they do it to just look cool? Well, if that's the case, passing judgement upon another individual doesn't make someone look cool in any way, shape, or form. I didn't realize society was all about making a fashion statement. I thought people were allowed to dress however they wanted. If someone doesn’t dress in a manner that's "normal" then they feel the need to bash, right? The experience I witnessed with the freshman has me a little conscious about what I wear. Later in the day, I witnessed the girl putting on a jacket that her mom brought to the school.
Where in the constitution does it state that someone must dress a particular way? Oh, that's right, it doesn't say that anywhere. People don’t deserve to be bullied because of their clothes, shoes, hair, or accessories.
