The Butler Way...
Demands commitment, denies selfishness, accepts reality, yet seeks improvement everyday, while putting others above self.
On Saturday, August 29th, Butler University took their mission statement to heart as 1,229 Bulldogs volunteered around Indianapolis. Bulldogs In The Streets, BITS, is Butler's annual day of service to kick off the academic year. In the past, it has been apart of incoming students' welcome week activities, this year however it was opened up to new and returning students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members in the Butler area.
I was lucky enough to lead a group of 40 students/faculty/community members as a Site Leader along with two other Butler students at The Villages, and family services agency. Our group was immediately in awe when we arrived and were surprised with welcome and thank you signs the children had made us. We were there to serve and how them love, and we were overwhelmed by the love showed to us. Needless to say, we were fully motivated to dedicate our best work in our time there, and I could really tell everyone's heart was in the right place. It was a great time getting to know other students as you serve together towards a common goal and cheering each other on even as the sweat was dripping and muscles started aching.
Michael Boyd, a junior Butler student who volunteered Saturday said,
"Seeing how excited Butler's student community was during BITS reinforced the idea that Butler is a place to grow not only academically, but as an active member in the Indianapolis community. I was so impressed with the new first year students and their eagerness to participate. We are creating sustainable, and impactful change beyond the Butler bubble!".
As college students, we are so blessed to have all the opportunities we are given and giving back to our community can not be taken for granted. As we serve our city of Indianapolis we make it a better place for everyone. It was a great day to be a bulldog and one I'll be looking forward to participating in again next year. #GoDawgs
