The world is yours.

To My Brother And Sister

Katie and Sean,

I know I see you every day and could probably say this to you in person, but you both know I like to write because I can get my point across more effectively. I wanted to take some time before you turn 15 to write something specifically to you—each of you as individuals.

Katie, you are priceless. You hold so much more value in others' lives than you realize, and you are worth so much more than you think. Other people need you in their lives, likely more than they will tell you. Your friends need your quirks, your laugh, your positivity, your humor, and your warm presence. Anyone who cannot value you for those things is not meant to stay in your life for long. You are worth the moon, the stars, and everything beyond; there is not a single person in this world who should ever lead you to believe otherwise. Life can be difficult, but you will pull through it because you are strong and smart. People can be stupid and irritating, but the people who are meant to be in your life won’t be any of those things. Be yourself around people because that is the person whom people will appreciate, love, and respect. The people and things meant to stay in your life will be easy to keep around—remember that. You have experienced plenty of situations you did not think you would survive, but you’re still here because you can survive anything. Believe in yourself. The world is yours.

Sean, you are infinite. Never let other people drag you down or kill your vibe. Be who you are and the world will adjust. Keep your humor, your empathy, and your wit—they will continue to serve you well. Life can be frustrating, especially as you get older, but having a good sense of humor and people who can help you to destress will make all the difference. Take the time to appreciate what and who you have because life won’t always be this way. Every step you take is leading you toward your future self, and I have full confidence that person will be as incredible as we think he will be. You are smart, confident, funny, and compassionate, and these are positive qualities to carry with you for the rest of your life. The people around you now and those who will be around you in the future should appreciate you for the person you truly are; if they can’t, they aren’t worth your energy. Learning to properly handle the things you can control and not to stress about the things you can’t will help you to achieve more in life because you won’t be holding yourself back. Take a deep breath, take in the world around you, and see the love around you. You can do anything you set your mind to, so do it. The world is yours.

Katie and Sean, I love you, and I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in your lives. Happy birthday!

Love,

Your Big Sister Emilie

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
