College made me question my bank account. Whenever I went out with my friends I would always take a look at my bank account before I made a purchase, just to make sure I wouldn't hear the embarrassing, "Sorry, the card has been declined."
The question is, why are we college students always broke? Most of us have a job or do work study that supplies us with money, but for some reason our bank accounts always seem terminally ill.
1. We always say yes to every invitation.
This is actually where most of us go wrong. We can never seem to say no to going out. Learn to say NO. No to consistent dinners, bars, clubs, and shopping. An occasional outing won't hurt, but you can't forget that going out does cost money.
2. We're involved in Greek Life.
Greek life is chaotic. With the amazing brothers and sisters you gain, you also lose money. The semester dues make you sit down and want to rethink your decision, but at the end of the day you realize it's all worth it.
3. Food
This is the biggest thing everyone spends money on. If you were to tabulate the amount of money you've spent on food in the past semesters, you might almost be able to buy a car. The five dollars here and there doesn't feel like anything, but it all adds up. So I say no to food making a hole in my pocket...actually, no, I lied, I love food way too much.
4. Transportation
Cabs, Ubers, and Lyfts are wonderful ideas, but sometimes you just want to invest in a car. The amount of money spent on transportation is actually crazy, unless you're smart and carpool. Carpooling is a much better option because you can split the cost of a ride or not pay anything at all if it's your friend's car.
5. Books
The greatest fear of all college students. They cost way too much to only be used for 2 weeks in some classes. At the beginning of the semester you invest in books that cost hundreds of dollars, and by the time you add them up you've spent thousands.
Here is the most useful tips of all: rent your books, they cost less. Utilize textbook comparing sites like slugbooks.com and at the end of the semester sell your books and gain back some money.
