College can be a funny place, full of new people and experiences, but that is no reason to be nervous about it. Here are a few confessions from college students that are just like you!
1. Nobody cares, except for you.
Despite everyone telling you that nobody cares what you wear, who you hangout with, or whether or not you are dining alone, it makes a difference to you. Nobody enjoys feeling like the outsider, and even if they won't admit it, everyone secretly cares what others think of them. After all, it is in our nature.
2. Class might be mandatory, but so is sleep.
According to the syllabus, that pesky 8am or annoying night class does count absences. But you do get three freebies, so why not use them! They are great for times when you need to catch up on another class. Just don't let yourself fall behind in the class you choose to skip.
3. Trying new things is super lame!
No, not really. College is all about new experiences: joining a club or Greek life, getting a job, or maybe even studying abroad. It actually makes you seem like a more interesting person and gives you things to talk about when you meet new people. Not to mention when applying for jobs, bosses love it!
4. The food in the dinning hall is all the rave.
Honestly, some schools' food is like your dining at a five star restaurant. But others, like mine, is a lot like if you are an inmate at an upscale prison. It isn't exactly "grey" mush but it's still pretty mushy. The food takes some time to get used to, and once you do get used to it then it is time for a break and you are back to blessed home cooked meals.
5. Drinking makes you cooler.
Technically speaking... no it doesn't. But when you're out at parties with your friends people do drink. Alcohol might not be your thing, so just grab a cup and hold onto it. It lets people think you're having fun without actually having to consume any alcohol. At a lot of schools people bring their own drinks anyway, so just fill a bottle with juice and you'll be good to go.
6. Everyone hates Greek life.
There is a lot of stigma around Greek life on college campuses, and while some organizations simply reiterate the reasons people hate them, others truly want to make a change. But despite what upperclassmen tell you about the fraternities and sororities everyone wants to be their friends come Friday night. The Greek houses have all the best parties and nobody wants to get left out.
7. The "I'm a broke college kid" is a lie.
Kids always have a way of finding money when they need it. The truth is that they are simply just awful at managing their money. Whether you're spending it on fast food to avoid hitting up the dining hall, buying candy at the campus store, or blowing your money on... "soda," you still have money. The choice is yours; spend wisely.
