Brock Turner Is In My Nightmares

As a girl I was told about boys like you.

Last night I awoke in a cold sweat with the last image being pinned in my mind, Brock Turner’s face, in my nightmare. I remember clearly that I was standing face to face with this monster and wanted to tell him all I had on my mind. While I can never possibly imagine the horrific amount of pain and fear that the victim will forever experience, this is in tribute to her, and for all rape victims who have been denied justice and given a lifetime of terror. Here it goes.

Brock Turner,

Born August 1st, 1995 in Ohio. You are 20-years-old. You attended Stanford on a scholarship and had hopes to be an Olympic swimmer. That was what you were at least, from the outside. But on the inside you are a monster. That is what I am calling you. I am not over exaggerating when I say you’re the thing I have nightmares about. One night you decided to go to a party and get drunk. You then decided it would be fun to take an intoxicated girl behind a dumpster and proceed to rape her. Well, Turner, looks like you never were taught about consent huh? Well let me give you a little lesson. Consent is when both parties are AGREEING to engage in sexual acts together, which mean you both say yes. I did not know that a girl stumbling and passed out represented a yes in your sick mind.

She did not agree Brock. She did not say yes. When in your mind was it ok for you to rape a girl who was unconscious on the ground and had no idea what was going on? Only monsters think it is ok. It is her body and she should have made the choice if she wanted to have sex with you, not you. You had no consideration for her as a human being and no respect for her body. You are only an ignorant person who rapes people who cannot fight back. As for your scholarship, I’m glad it was revoked because you do not deserve to pursue your dreams when you have killed her dreams. You cannot eat your favorite snacks? Poor thing. Well because of you, she can’t sleep at night, and when she does, there has to be a light on. She pushes her plate away at dinner because she isn’t hungry, and she lays in fear every waking moment knowing you’re the monster that was inside her and she will forever feel the sting of your touch.

You got a short sentence for one of the worst crimes imagined, you’re lucky for that. But do not smile too soon because I believe that karma is real and in time you will get what you deserve. Must be nice to have privilege huh? Looking back on your case, Brock, I must say, your whole family are monsters for sticking up for what you did and dismissing it as if you were the victim. Well you are not and will never be the victim Brock. Your parents and common sense should have taught you that rape is wrong and what you did is a disgusting act against another human being. She will never be the same from that “20 minutes of action”, because for her it’s a “lifetime of action.”

She will forever think about how you hurt her and left her in pine needles behind a dumpster raping her, and taking pictures for your friends. As a girl I was told about the boys like you. You’re real, and you’re terrifying. But us girls are fighters, and we will fight back until we can get people like you locked up for good and get justice. No one deserves to be raped, NO ONE. Do not blame her on her consumption of alcohol because if I remember correctly you were drinking too. But it’s her fault right? We live in a society where we tell girls to not go out and drink cause they might get raped, but we don’t tell monsters like you to not rape girls. You are a disgusting human being Brock Turner. Oh, wait, sorry, you don’t deserve to be called human because you’re not.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
