One of my goals for the new year was to broaden my horizons when it comes to music. I realized that I was listening to a lot of the same things and needed a change. My best friend, Kaitlin, is a huge fan of Johnny Cash, so I decided to start with him.
I began by watching the movie Walk the Line. I had never seen this movie, so I was pretty excited about it. It was shocking to me how the phases of his life played out and how he ultimately let drugs take over his career and life. The thing that was so interesting to me was the fact that Elvis, Jerry Lee, and Johnny all came up in their careers together. Watching the movie inspired me to get on Spotify and listen to some more of his hits. So far, my favorite album is At Folsom Prison (Live). This album was recorded inside Folsom Prison in California with the inmates as the crowd. The song soon became a big hit. I love that you get to hear his words and really get to know him through his music. His birthday was yesterday, he would have been 85. I think it's safe to that Johnny Cash left his mark on Country music.
I recently purchased Sirius XM, and it has a channel completely dedicated to Elvis. I'm hooked! I've always loved Elvis but listening to the channel has really opened my eyes to the amount of songs I have never heard before. The thing that was so interesting about Elvis is how diverse he was in everything. He had so many different albums across all genres. He did it all! There is truly something for everyone. I believe this is what played a big role in his career. On the channel, there was an interview from Elvis' drummer, Ronnie Tutt, and he stated Elvis did not like to rehearse. Elvis seemed like the type who would just go out and rock it on stage, regardless of what might happen. Elvis Presley left his mark on all genres across the music industry.
Unfortunately, I have not yet had the chance to listen to Jerry Lee Lewis, but I ensure you he is next on my list. As I continue my journey of broadening my horizons, I look forward to new and old music that I have not yet been exposed to. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment!
