In my high school, it was a requirement to take a second language in order to graduate. Lucky for me, the only language to take was Spanish. If I'm being totally honest, I did NOT take that class seriously at all the two years I was in it! Now that I am taking Spanish in college in order to receive my diploma in my chosen major, I realize it's actually a really great idea to have some clue as to how to have a conversation with someone else. Another thing I realized was that I REALLY should have payed more attention in high school! Taking Spanish in college thus far has given me a better appreciation of how important learning a second language can be. Here are some benefits of learning a foreign language.
1. Valuable in the workplace.
For many majors at Grand Canyon University that deals with communicating with people you'll have to take a second language class. And that is because for many jobs, having some bilingual people on their team is completely a must! Any where you go you may in touch with someone who English is not their primary speech. And in a job situation at a desk or over the phone or at Walgreens or Hobby Lobby really where ever being able to hold a conversation is vital for the business. By learning and understanding a second language instantly your resume looks even more appealing to empoyers.
2. It Challenges you!
I don't think I need an outside article to tell you that learning a new language can be tough. I'm only in my first week of Spanish and I think I have re-learned my entire two years of high school Spanish within the matter of a week! My brain hurts so much that I keep using the wrong form of tener (to have) AND to top it all off... I can still only count to 10 in Spanish.
3. It's rewarding!
Learning and understanding a conversation being spoken in Spanish brings some serious benefits- including better opportunities in the work place! Being bi-lingual is becoming exceedingly more popular, and those who speak English and Spanish are much more likely to get a job. And HELLO!!! BRAGGING RIGHTS!
If I'm being honest here, I wrote this article as a way to avoid more of my homework because I am seriously struggling! Motivation just wasn't happen to me. Writing this article was my own way of motivating myself while I'm encouraging you to do something that you've never thought you'd do. Life flies by so why not now!? Be like this kid and JUST DO IT! I'm pumped for the rest of this semester of learning! What are you pumped for? Good luck buddy!
