Texas Tech Greek life deserves more credit

An Open Apology to Brittany Haynes

I recently went inactive in my sorority, which is considered, "Early Alum". But even though I'm technically not a GDI...I'm pretty much a GDI. However, I'll always wear my letters. I'm proud of them. My daughters will still be considered legacies, and I will always be a tri delt. I will always have my sisters. I will always be biased and say Jennifer Thompson is the best president we ever had, and Carol Locke — although she is classified as our house mom — is the definition of goals when it comes to being an amazing lady in general, and is by far more of a best friend than "mom."

So recently, I've seen Greek life from the outside looking in. And compared to last year, I think this year is starting off a bit more positive and more fun. I've heard a ton of talk about how Greek life is "cracking down," and a ton of new rules are coming into play. Although they are for the safety of all of us, in some ways, as my very good girl and guy friends have talked about, it makes many members feel like they are looked down upon, or even expected to do and act in certain negative ways. An unintentional feeling brought upon them, but an intentional message regarding the expectations of them.

Except one thing many fail to realize or expect is how incredibly strong our Greek life is. How selfless each chapter is and how willing everyone is to sincerely help other's chapters when going through a time of struggle, distress, discomfort, you name it. The sense of unity Greek life reflects and shares is amazing. Greek life comes together in certain ways that allow people to see how amazing every chapter is — even when they have some not-so-amazing moments.

Brittany Haynes, a drop dead gorgeous Zeta Tau Alpha was in a car wreck recently, and she, thank God, made it out alive. Brittany is losing a leg because of this accident. Both her femurs were shattered, and that's only one of the injuries that occurred. The recovery process of her back, neck, other leg, and her whole body is just beginning.

Her sorority immediately was by her side and let her know they wouldn't leave it. Websites were made, fundraisers were organized, and shirts were designed within a week. But Zetas weren't the only ones out to help Brittany — Greek life was. Fraternities and sororities were donating, sharing Facebook links, attending fundraisers, and buying shirts. People who don't even know her. In fact, I don't even know her.

We said hi at the dorms last year and follow each other on social media, but I didn't have the privilege of knowing her before her accident.

It's no secret she is clearly a rockstar, but I owe her an apology.

I read your go-fund-me page on Friday morning, and Friday night I was in a car accident. My hand may take a little while to work again, but I still have it. Even typing that makes me feel terrible, because it's nothing compared to what you're going through. Every time my mom had to help me shower, change, eat, etc., I thought of you. I can't imagine losing a limb, and I now have a whole new perspective on how I view the term #BrittanyStrong, and so should everyone else.

I was comfy in bed, and too lazy to go get my card to donate to your cause. And that's selfish, rude, inconsiderate, and incredibly low of me. But the reason I am writing about it is because I feel like I wasn't the only one who read your page and didn't donate, or saw your shirts and didn't want to mess with my allowance for the month. I'm sorry, Brittany.

But the difference between my previous mindset and current mindset is this — you can't be lazy. You have no choice but to be strong. You'd love to walk out of that bed if you could. And your allowance, it most likely will be different for a while. I don't care how much money anyone has, prosthetics and medical bills are stressful and can change a families life for a long time.

You are incredible. And your recovery process is going to show everyone exactly how strong we already think and know you are.

It is so obvious that you are loved and cared about by so many people, and how many people are here for you - we all ar. And I am so sorry it took me to experience not having a working hand for a little while to be motivated to donate.

The last thing you or your family should be concerned about is money, I can't imagine everything else going on. And if we, me, the GDI's, and Greek life overall has the opportunity to make y'all's road easier, it's a no-brainier. Let's all do it.

To anyone reading this, please donate and help Brittany. You really have no idea how much she's praying to get out of that bed, and able to go home back to Lubbock. Don't be a "me." Get up and get your debit card.

You're a rockstar Brittany, and I am so totally proud to say I'm #BrittanyStrong.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
