**Movie spoiler Alert**
"Bridesmaids" came out in 2011 as a comedy about a rivalry to be the bride's best friend. The movie is generally renowned for being the adult version of "Mean Girls." However, "Bridesmaids" has far deeper meaning than "Mean Girls." "Bridesmaids" is a comforting hand for every mid twenty-year old facing a life crisis.
The story is about the maid of honor, Annie. Just like many mid-twenties people, Annie's life is far from how she pictured it. Annie is an entrepreneur who lost her business, her dream, and her boyfriend. She works a job where she is not appreciated in order to pay rent and bills. Her roommates are awful. Her car is a piece of junk with no cup holder or working taillights. But because all of Annie's money is going towards her living expenses, she cannot even afford to fix her taillights.
When Annie's best friend, Lillian (Lilly), gets engaged, Annie could not be happier. It is all great until Annie meets Lilly's new friends who are all married and well to do. Then Annie meets Lilly's newest "best friend", Helen. Helen is wealthy, married, and very well put together. Instantly, Annie becomes jealous of Helen. The jealously creates tension and in the end separation between Lilly and Annie. Additionally, Annie looses her job, ruins the bachelorette party and wedding shower as well as moves back into her mom's home.
So how does Annie relate to all of us? How many of us have lost the one person we thought we were going to marry? How many of us graduated college and had to move back in with our parents? Or how many of us couldn't find a job after graduation or a well paying job?
If you said yes to any of the above questions, no worries--you are not alone. Just like Annie, we have all "hit rock bottom" with no idea how to even get up. We look around and ask ourselves, how did we even get down here? When did everything go so wrong? Often, so many things went wrong at once leaving us clueless to what and when something really did go wrong.
Once Annie hit rock bottom, she did what we all would do--watch Netflix and mope. When we go through life crisis--whether that is loosing a job, barely being able to cover our own bills, or less successful than our friends--we tend to isolate ourselves and view ourselves alone in life. Watching Bridesmaids and seeing that Annie goes through the exact ordeals we go through helps us realize that 1) we are not alone and 2) we will survive.
Next time you feel alone or down about life, just watch "Bridesmaids."
