“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'” Isaiah 30:21.
Setting: Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) gathering on a Thursday night
Mood: Awestruck
Spiritual Status: On a mission
We traveled back in time for a bit, but I had to pretend that this was Myspace and tell you more than you want to know about my life. My mood and my mindset have everything to do with what God has been doing in my life recently, and that's why I would rather you be aware of it.
So, people, have you ever had that moment where you’ve said, “God, I know I’m not supposed to _____________, but…” I had a moment like that this week, but I'm content because of it. I started off my week with a simple prayer, “GOD, GET ME THROUGH THIS WEEK.” It was quietly screamed in my head, actually.
Recently, attention and finding interest in school has been a big issue. I have loved school, but in some of my classes, I have realized I have no interest, and it is extremely hard to motivate myself to do something I see as unnecessary. God is a timely God, and He proved this attribute as He wove himself into my life this week.
I was sitting in the back of Young Harris’s one and only lecture hall, while a senior gave a beautiful message to all those in attendance at Underground, a student-led ministry that meets twice a week. Her main themes were trust, prayer, and community.
- 1. We have to trust God, that He placed us with people He knows we need. Also, that He placed us with people that He knows need us. When you share your worries and your troubles with those people in your life, the impact can be transforming. When you share, you aren’t casting a burden on someone else. You may be helping someone share what they are too embarrassed to confess themselves. The main point is, trust people and trust God by sharing.
- 2. When you share your burdens, pray about it. You don't have to carry them. If God could carry the weight of the sins of the world on a cross, then He can surely handle your burdens. Lifting your triumphs and struggles to God in prayer allows you to bond with people, and it can give you peace and assurance that they are in much better hands than your own.
- 3. We were made for community. We need each other. 1 Corinthians 12:21-26 speaks truth in saying that, “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’" On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. When He works, He expects you to take action. Share your victories, burdens, and those special things that God shows you.
This lesson came to my mind as we dove into John 4 on Thursday night at BCM. When we started speaking about one of Jesus’s miracles, the question came up, “What are your thoughts on miracles?” I thought back to what happened Wednesday morning. I had a very special moment with God. I started the day with a prayer that went something like, “God, you are an amazing God. I know I am not supposed to ask this, but can you show me that I am supposed to be at Young Harris? I don’t need a sign, I guess, but if you provided, then that would be great.” I went to my 8 a.m,, then my 9 a.m., and still no sign of his miraculous powers.
At around 10 a.m. I said a little prayer again, “God, I’m not looking for something miraculous, but really I just want a sense of peace and comfort. I know as long as I am in Your will, then things will work out, but… If I am where I need to be, then speak to me however you can. Testify with my spirit, and let me know that You hear me.” I kept walking. Then, I walked on the brick portion of the ground. I glanced down at the bricks to inspect, and I contemplated, “Is this for me? Do You work this fast?” I was in amazement because on first glance, I thought I saw an “M” in the pattern of the bricks. I looked back and realized the whole patio area is covered in M’s. My initials are MM.
I calmly stood there, walked inside, and smiled. At first, I wanted to not believe that God does things just for individual people, but He is our Father. As a dear friend explained to me at BCM, as I shared my personal miracle story, when He wants to use our unique perspective to reveal something to us, He will. I wrote out a prayer in reflection of what God revealed to me, and I'd like to let you reflect on it, as well.
Part of the prayer went, “You allowed me to walk on the same bricks that I do every day, and see it with a new perspective. I just happened to look down and to my left, in the bricks I saw an ‘M,’ and then another, and another. I felt like You were telling me that I am important, and I am supposed to be at Young Harris. I felt like You were telling me that my life is woven into the foundation, there to support people, and remain stable on rainy days. I felt as if You were saying, ‘You have more of a purpose and a future than you realize.’ In another way, I also felt like You were telling me that things would work out no matter what. As long as my perspective is Yours. If I’m not seeing through Your eyes, then nothing will work out. But, if I look at the world through Your eyes, then everything will work out. You give me the reasoning behind why life works, anyway, so in the end, as long as I have You, then I’m OK. Thank You for loving me individually and in a unique way. Whenever I look down at the brick patios, then I will be reminded that Your love is greater, as well as the fact that things will work out at Young Harris.”
I may not have the full blue print, but I know that He will build my life exactly how he wants to, and He will do the same for all of His children.
