With today’s ease of communication and information trade, it is becoming incredibly surprising that the unity of nations is so hard to achieve. War and terrorism have been a part of humanity’s entire existence; but, does it have to be? Must we continue to pull away from our chances of world peace, simply to obtain economic and personal gain? The United Nations and European Union have been prime examples of multiple countries coming together and progressing away from separation of economies and nationalities. These organizations encourage immigration, communication, and globalization in a manner that presents the opportunity for the lesser nations to level their playing fields.
With the outcome of the most recent vote for the ‘Brexit’ movement, the world is reverting to an environment that expects movements to increase separation instead of unity. With the decision to separate from the single market that the EU provides, Britain believes they will finally have the opportunity to increase their economy to its full potential. The restrictions that result from open borders for both workers and business owners can damper the potential for an individual to excel. There is a downfall for the middle class as well, considering that their standard of living plateaus or decreases in a single market. To me, these downfalls are not outweighed in the slightest by the potential for uniformity and acceptance worldwide.
Racism, sexism, and stereotyping have drawn rifts between nations for ages. There have been countless movements in pursuit of these struggles and the world has grown significantly because of it. Now is the time to continue progressing and accepting the equality of everyone around us. Providing opportunities for those who previously lost hope. This is not an era in which it should be acceptable for is to revert to closed of borders and economies so that we can individually claim status and power.
The EU was created to limit hostilities between countries by requiring on their trades to bring them together. From war, continued peace was agreed upon. While we all still have a very long way to go before we can unite completely, travel, trade, and communication have never been more reliable and accessible. We should take advantage of the benefits provided by our day and age, and work towards unity, not separation.
