If you've been on social media this past week, I'm sure you've come across everyone's new, favorite kazoo-playing youth, Brett Ambler. If you haven't...
This video, due to the sheer awkwardness of it, as well as the confusion it incites, has taken the internet by storm this past week, leading to all sorts of attention. People who have come across it are left with many questions: what IS it? Why is this kid playing the kazoo? Where did these clips come from? Why do the voices of the children sound like grown women? Most importantly, who is this man behind the video we've all been obsessing over?
Thankfully, the endless abyss that is the internet has answered these questions for us! The man behind the kazoo is named Brett Ambler, whose twitter can be found here. He held an AMA on Reddit this week that answered a lot of our burning questions. Here are the highlights:
So where is this video from?
As the video itself indicates, the footage is from something entitled "You On Kazoo." Apparently, the clips are from a 30-minute film, the entirety of which can be viewed here. According to Brett:
"There are actually THREE videos out there. The first one came with a Kazoo shrink wrapped to the side. 'Special Friends: Starring You On Kazoo'. The next one was called 'Let's Sing Along' and came with a fake plastic microphone. Those two are on Youtube now, in full. The last one was called 'Ring Along Sing Along' and came with jingle bells."
Let's just say I know how I'll be spending my day tomorrow.
How does today's Brett feel about the video's return?
Multiple users were concerned about the impact that this video resurfacing may be having on the now-adult Brett. In his AMA, he reflected upon when he realized the magnitude of its resurgence, as well as how he feels about it.
"I was in rehearsal for a children's theater show I'm doing (Junie B. Jones) and someone came in and said 'Hey did you know you're on Buzzfeed?'. Just like that."
"I doubt the kazoo kid will do me any harm [in my career]. He seems so nice. My girlfriend Amanda found my copy of You On Kazoo early in our relationship. She was surprised. Thank goodness I used to be cute."
Why do the kids sound so creepy?
When the other kids speak in the film, there is a clear disconnect between the way the kids are talking and the voices coming out of their mouths. Brett's explanation is simple:
"Tons of it was dubbed. The writer/producers Melissa & Doug dubbed lots of the kazooing and Melissa and I dubbed lots of voices. The sound on set wasn't always awesome and some of us in the cast weren't awesome kazooists."
There you have it. Apparently skilled kazooists are difficult to come by, and short films about kazoos have limited budgets.
Where is Brett now?
Many people are curious to know what has become of the charismatic kazooist. According to the AMA, Brett is actually a fairly accomplished actor, fresh out of a role as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story in Colorado. He is currently working on a children's theatre piece on Junie B. Jones, as stated above; his favorite song on kazoo is "Bohemian Rhapsody"; and if you were to ask him if he'd like to do a kazoo jam sesh, his response would be:
"Yes. Yup. Yes I do."
