Breathe In, Breathe Out

Try Not to Hold Your Breath

Breathe In, Breathe Out

Sometimes in life, you just need to take a step back from everything. This may be something you have heard before, but if you're anything like me, you might not have actually done it.

This is where I urge you to actually do so.

As I am writing this, it is "dead week" at school. But, my "dead week" is anything but dead. In fact, it might be the busiest week I have had all semester. I have been swamped with projects and preparing for my finals, and I know I am not the only one.

So I decided to take a step back and write this article. And as I am writing this, I have come to realize a few things.

It is okay to spend more time on yourself than with your friends or helping your friends out. If it's for your well-being, your friends will understand. Everyone will understand. It is okay, even recommended might I add, to take some time to get your thoughts under control and calm yourself down.

We are in that stage of our lives when we are dawdling around in school, yet we are being teased with the responsibilities that come with adulthood. Some of us have internships. Some of us have jobs. Some of us are swamped with schoolwork. Some of us are studying for the next step of our education. Some of us are out there trying to find a job to give them some sort of security for that time that inevitably comes after receiving our diplomas.

This can take a lot out of a person. I know this because it has been taking a lot out of me. It has been taking a lot out of my friends, who are all trying to solidify their plans for the summer. Balancing school, work, and plans for the future is not meant to be an easy task. Yet, it is the task that a lot of us face on a daily basis.

Take time for yourself outside of the scope of school and work. Even if you do not want to spend time with friends, I encourage you to take a step back. Binge-watch Netflix. Buy for yourself that one item that has been on your wish list for several months. Take a walk. Do anything that can help set your mind at peace, because we all know that we are going to need that sanity to push through to graduation and beyond.

So when you are preparing to study for finals, hoping for that grade that will allow you to pass your classes without your conscience bugging you, remember that it is okay to take a break, to get yourself calm and mentally prepared for the stress that inevitably will follow. Remember that you are your own number one priority, and treat yourself as such.

Breathe in, breathe out. Life won't take you down.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
