Just to give a little background of myself, I like to think of myself as someone who enjoys the outdoors, but in reality, I am way too lazy on a daily basis to have a proper connection with Mother Nature. Also, there is the slight problem with the fact that if I step outside in Florida, between the months of January to December, I automatically start sweating and my hair frizzes up to twice its normal size.
So you can imagine how surprised I was that not only did I decide to go to a blueberry picking farm called Beck Brothers Citrus Inc., but I also enjoyed it? It’s probably a once in a lifetime freak of nature event, but I’m not questioning it. I absolutely adored it.
My adventure buddy in life is my best friend and my boyfriend, Blake. So he was a very good sport as I planned to be a little bit more adventurous with our date night. We figured that we might as well start trying new things and do a little more with our lives besides binge watching Arrow with a carton of Ben and Jerry’s in our hands.
So we came into it thinking that it was going to be a bit mundane and take about 20 minutes to pick some berries and bounce. And not only that, but we went on a day where it was overcast for most of the morning. So in conclusion, we had very low expectations.
But to our surprise, when we finally pulled up to the blueberry farm, the sun had decided to end its game of hide-and-seek and grace us with its presence. Which not only made the sky more appealing, but it also stepped up the scenery that was surrounding us.
As soon as we stepped out of the car, we were surrounded by the sweetest people whether they were working there or enjoying the abundance of blueberries. So we grabbed a bucket, and thanks to a pro tip from one of the families that were return customers, we headed for the very back of the farm.
The over adorable and kind old man informed us that not many people wanted to walk all the way to the back, but that is where the best blueberries were located. And I would highly recommend doing the same thing if you are planning on taking the trip out there.
We both collectively thought that there was no definitive way that we would pick our way up to fill a six-pound bucket. But as you wander through, row by row, and realize the simple pleasure in picking your favorite blueberries, you cannot help but find yourself filled to the top in a matter of 30 minutes.
Between wanting to pick the little ones because they are so cute, greedily snatching the big ones because they must have the perfect taste, and plucking the bluest instead of the greenest ones, you find yourself lost in a sea of fruit and frankly not caring if you find your way out.
However, we did manage to bring ourselves back to reality and finally take our blueberries home with our pride swelling. I mean after all, we are inside people taking a brave risk into the outside world. But I have to admit, it was a lot more enjoyable than I imagined and we were basking in its sweetness for days after.
I fancy myself a chef/baker at certain moments in my life. So the second that we got home, I also picked up some stuff at the store. I immediately took off to the kitchen and started making a blueberry pie, a blueberry crumble, and a blueberry ice-cream. And to me, my family, and my friends, they were all instant sensations.
Even making all of that, we still had a ton left over. So my boyfriend took some to his family as well as took some home for himself and I gave some to my best friend for her smoothies (she’s a workout monster, unlike myself).
So whether you typically spend your time inside rather than outside, love feeling the raw sunshine on your face, want to grab some blueberries for health reasons, or want to enjoy the sweetness of them within a diet-breaking dessert, going to Becks Brothers Citrus is an amazing choice. And trust me when I say that we plan to go back (and to some other fruit picking farms) very, very soon.
