If you're anything like me you unfortunately do not have enough money to go see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child performed live in London. So, naturally, when I heard that the script for this exact play was to be published, I could not wait to get my hands on it. Any sort of 'Harry Potter' continuation is something to look forward to, so I waited--and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was definitely worth the wait. Although the format of a script was very different from the original series, it brought back some of the best characters from the series (and introduced some new ones) in a way that any Potterhead can appreciate.
First of all, 'Cursed Child' brings back the characters that we have loved since the beginning, my personal favorites being Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. As it turns out, Ronald Weasley is like fine wine, meaning he gets better with age. Granted, I do not mean this in the usual sense of appearance, but I mean that Ron has grown sincerely funny since we last saw him. Cracking a joke no matter the circumstance, Ron Weasley has definitely remained a fan favorite along with his wife, Hermione, who has turned into the absolute boss that we all knew she would become. Even though our bushy-haired protagonist is now the Minister for Magic, Hermione seems to have held on to all of the things that are important to her, namely her friends and family (I mean, she even skimps out on candy because her parents are dentists.) Where Ron cracks a joke, Hermione brings the sense and wisdom to any situation. So basically nothing has changed since the old days.
Not only are we shown the continued lives of some of our beloved, live, characters, we are also reunited with some of our favorite, well, not alive characters as well. The most shocking return came in the form of Severus Snape, who worked with Ron and Hermione against Voldemort in an alternate universe. You heard me, they worked together. Not only did that bring us all back to our devastation at the death of Severus Snape in the actual universe, but he also stated that he was proud to have Albus Severus Potter bear his name. Severus Snape, everybody, messing with our emotions since the beginning of the 'Harry Potter' franchise.
Finally, we're introduced to many new characters, specifically Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy. Albus Potter, to begin, is actually somewhat of a let-down. The middle child of Harry and Ginny, and a Slytherin, Albus is whiny and stubborn. Of course, that all ends up good and well as he comes to terms with his parentage and his capabilities. Scorpius Malfoy, like Albus, is unlike his father in every which way. A kind, patient, and understanding young man, Scorpius is everything that Draco should have been. All in all, the two make the best of friends and I would love something written about them in the future.
Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for blessing us with the 'Harry Potter' universe, the characters within it and always providing us Potterheads for something to look forward to.
