I have enjoyed the majority of my classes during my student career. These are the classes that excite me most about the future in front of me and the potential profession that awaits. But let's pause for a moment. How about all the classes you sit through that cause you to sleep with your eyes wide open? Countless doodles, maybe even a legit nap, and unbearable minute-counting are all things that help us pass the time in order to be free from boredom. While these things are all somewhat helpful to pass the time, there are other pass-time activities that could be more beneficial to your time.
1. Take Notes
This is one thing I have noticed that helps the time go by the most. Yes, I know, continuous writing might seem pointless, and most of what is being talked about in the lecture is sitting on a powerpoint slide. But believe me when I say, "It makes time fly!" The benefit being that this information is not only talked about, but it is also being written. Therefore, you are more likely to retain the information, which means better grades on tests and quizzes.
2. Do Homework
What better time can you think of then in class? I know I would rather be doing homework while I sit in on a boring lecture than on a day over the weekend when I could be having fun. Maybe you do not have any for the week...DO NEXT SOMETHING ANYWAY! Not only will you get ahead, but you might find that your stress decreases and the procrastination you planned prior to seeing an assignment disappears.
3. Write
One other activity I like to do to pass time is write. I find that it is much easier for me to hear my thoughts, while my professor rants about 'Comparing Spoken and Written Language.' For some people, you might think it is distracting to write while someone speaks, but trust me...you learn to block it out. Not only does writing keep me preoccupied, but it also is an awesome de-stresser. I find that I do not always get the time to just write and end up losing many thoughts if I do not take the time while in class.
Personally, I find it quite unfair to be stuck in a required class that does not excite an individual to want to learn. Who is to blame...I won't point fingers, but education is important and there are millions of students paying good money to skip or sleep through lectures simply because the professor is not making the class enjoyable. Whether you like to shop online, scroll through Tumblr, or text, I would encourage you to use the time (that you are paying for) to do something constructive to your education. If I do not feel that the professor is trying to engage his/her students, you know what I will be doing!
