For those of you who may like to read over the summer or for those of you looking to add something(s) to your list(s) in general, the following may just help you do so! Here are five books that I would recommend to read.
1. The Catcher in the Rye
Yes, yes, I know that most of us dreaded reading this in High School. Yet, let me just just say how much this book has helped me in that awkward stage of my life. Now that I am older, it is a fun read for me and quite enjoyable to see all of the phonies look at me funny for saying that this book is hands down my favorite.
2. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
This novel puts you into the world of a little boy's life changing experience on 9/11. It is an extremely moving read. Trust me, the tears will be flowing, so be prepared!
3. Dhalgren
For you postmodern junkies, this book is right up your ways! It is a beautiful complicated labyrinth. Though quite confusing at first, the novel eventually ties itself together leaving you with a cliff hanger that I personally loved.
4. Brief Interviews With Hideous Men
The people who like reads that are non-formal, that have an interview like set up style of writing, you will enjoy this novel. It is literally a collection of various people; with the twist that readers do not know the question that the interviewer is asking. Makes you really think and use your imagination!
5. Infinite Jest
This book. Let me tell you. This book is easily one of the most challenging and rewarding pieces of literature that I have EVER read. I recommend you having a dictionary by your side because Wallace uses more uncommon words in this piece of work than ever before. It is all about tennis, drug addiction, addiction to the self, media and other things. When you read this book you feel like you are addicted to it just like the characters are addicted to their own drug of choice. It is very long (1079 pages long to be exact) but is beyond worth it!
