7 Things Book Lovers Judge Books On Other Than Their Covers

Certainly, don't stop at the cover.

Whether you read books constantly or prefer to skim the shelves once in a blue moon, everyone is guilty of judging a book by its cover. That is by no means a bad thing (just keep it to books and not people).

However, it is also important to acknowledge a book as being more than just its cover. It simply cannot be denied. Therefore, I propose a few other things to judge a book by.

1. The opinions others have on it

This one is a must. More often than not, the opinions of others have not steered me wrong. In fact, it has encouraged me to open up some of the books that became my favorites.

2. The author

This is another relatively reliable gauge on whether or not you will like a book. If you have read something by a particular author before, and you liked it, chances are you won’t have strong negative feelings about other books written by the same author.

3. The way it smells

New and crisp or old and dusty book smells are the best smells.

4. How it looks next to other books

I like to call myself a book hoarder. I collect them and once they are shelved, the chances of them being resold or given away are almost zero. For that reason, I cannot help but think about how a book will look sitting next to other books.

5. The character's decisions

Of course, this is one that can only happen after one has read a book, but all my fiction-lovers out there know that nothing is worse than a book full of characters who make downright stupid choices. I mean, I don’t know how many times I want to shout at the characters for simply not talking to each other. Lack of communication should be an outlawed plot device.

6. Whether it makes you laugh, smile, squeal or cry

Make me cry, I dare ya! If it makes you feel epic emotions, there is no denying it is a quality novel.

7. The sound a book makes when you throw it across the room

We have all been there. Whether you're angry or sad, when a book makes you literally throw it across the room you know it is a good one.

Books are the closest thing we humans have to magic if you ask me. They are literally one of the greatest things on this Earth, so if you’ve got the time, don’t be afraid to delve a little deeper and judge them by more than just what is on the surface.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
