India is the country that produces the most films in the world. Within India, there are numerous different film industries usually separated by the state. This is because there are different languages spoken in India. One of the most popular industry that it known to the world is the Hindi film industry, or otherwise known as “Bollywood”. Bollywood has one of the biggest audiences and the biggest budgets. I mean, what’s not to love? The grand dance numbers and the ostentatious sets make these films visually pleasing to watch. But what a lot of people don’t know is that some of the biggest hits in Bollywood are actually remakes of south Indian films. Coming up with a list of all the remakes from south Indian cinema was not a difficult task. The hard part was narrowing the list down. Here are five notable hits in Bollywood that are south Indian remakes.
1. Rowdy Rathore
Who doesn’t like the catchy tunes and the goofiness of the hero in this film? "Rowdy Rathore" is a remake of the Telugu film, "Vikramarkudu." "Vikramarkudu" has been remade in four different languages. While the original and the Hindi remake were both box office hits, it actually became one of the highest-grossing films of all time in Bollywood.
2. Holiday
3. Bhool Bhulaiyaa
This psychological horror film captivated everyone with the unique genre and plot line. "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" is a remake of the 1993 Malayalam film, "Manichitrathazhu." The point of this is to show that the movies that you are watching may or may not be originals. Sometimes in remakes the essence and vibe changes and it makes it seem like you are watching something totally different. Jokes and punchlines may not be delivered in the same comical way when another person does it. If you enjoy these films then perhaps you should give south Indian films a try. There are so many great films out there that are so underrated.
I think that south Indian film industries deserve more love considering the fact that a lot of these Bollywood hit films are remakes of their films. So next time when you decide to watch a movie, check out some south Indian ones. Maybe you'll find yourself enjoying the original more than the remake.
