Have you ever experienced those moments when you don’t know what to write about? Yeah, I am having one of those moments right now. So, I decided that I would write about why that situation is the way it is. You may ask me, “But how is that possible?” My response to you is, “Read and you will find out.”
First, I would like to start with the process of coming up with an idea. How do we generate an idea? Good question. There are several ways to do this. We could brainstorm – wait! That’s all that I could think of! You may be saying that I am playing around or that I do not know what I am saying; you may be right. I learned from my many years of story writing that you have to let the story take you on an adventure. Sometimes it is better to just let your imagination run free in the wilds of your college-ruled notebook paper. Why notebook paper? Another great question. I have always started my stories on notebook paper. I love the texture of the paper and my fingers adore my favorite mechanical pencil. Basically, it is just my preference. You can start however you want and whichever way you want. So go for it! Let your imagination run wild and let an amazing adventure fill your mind. After we start with our ‘piece of art’, we can take a minute and admire our two sentences with awe. Because you probably have written a masterpiece already? Right? No. Keep going. After our short break, we jump back in and keep on moving forward. Next thing we know we are flipping pages and then having to get more notebooks. But oh no! You get interrupted! Please don’t be a jerk like the dad in The Shining, just relax and take a deep breath. Smile politely and listen to what they have to say. Obviously, in your mind you are wanting to strangle them and—no. You should think positive thoughts. Shake your head up and down and say, “Uh-hunh.” Just so that the person that so rudely interrupted your amazing train of thought could leave you alone. Once that person has left, you immediately get back to your paper. That’s when you realize that your train of thought derailed and there were no survivours. What do you do now besides ripping your hair out. If you guessed going to bed, you are more than likely right. I might play a video game or read a book. Often times I will go to bed and try to finish it in the morning. Okay, now you got a night’s rest. But all you could dream about was what you wanted to write in your story. Well, go ahead and try to fit them in. After a while, you will realize what fits and what does not fit. So, after many hours and sometimes days of anguish and frustration, you finally finish your story. Now what? You read it over of course! That way you can see how much of a mess that your handwriting and grammar is. I know, I’ve done this before. It takes time for a writer to be good with their grammar. But it is not impossible.
Now finally, you let other people read your work. Or you don’t. It is completely up to you. Remember my opening point? About how I didn’t know what I wanted to write about? I don’t think that I have that issue anymore for this paper. So, it’s really not impossible to get past the infamous writer’s block.
