Having A Birthday During Finals Week

Let's face it, having a birthday during finals week can be the worst. First of all, you and your friends are busy studying and stressing over the exams. Second, your professors may not care, and will give you no extra credit as your birthday present. You may even have to go through this cycle for the rest of your college career! Don't worry. My birthday is the day before one of my exams, but with time management (and hope) I am still celebrating my birthday. Here are 11 reasons why you, too, should still celebrate your birthday during finals week:

1. You are a Sagittarius.

For finals, you are looking for any good sign of a passing grade. Coincidentally, the stars align for you during finals week. Trust your zodiac sign that you will pass these exams.

2. Take a break from studying.

Students tend to be stressed during finals week. Take a break from those hours of studying and sleepless nights at Brody with a cupcake!

3. View your birthday as surviving this school year.

Look at it this way: you made it. You may have failed your midterm, but you can still manage to
pass the class! Always look at the glass the half full.

4. You are one year smarter!

At least you can say you gained knowledge this year! That's an accomplishment!

5. Your birthday is also the end of the semester, not just finals week.

Remember after finals week is winter break! Also, during finals week you do not have class, which means more time to plan a birthday celebration!

6. Exam on your birthday? Celebrate afterwards!

When your professor says "Time's up!," it is time to turn up!

7. Connect with family and old friends.

If you haven't spoken to your family and friends back at home since Thanksgiving, or even since this semester started, this week is the best time to connect. Hear birthday wishes and words of encouragement from the ones you love.

8. Think positive, stress makes you age.

You really do not want to look older than you're turning!

9. Celebrate with friends!

Have a birthday dinner with your friends. You are not alone! Some of your friends may have a birthday during finals week too, so plan ahead and have fun!

10. Real friends remember your birthday.

If your schedule demands studying, don't worry! Your friends help celebrate for you! They may make brownies for you, or throw you a surprise party.

11. It's your birthday!

It is your birthday! Feel happy, feel relaxed, feel appreciative. You deserve to have a good time, and a passing grade!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
