When my mom does something embarrassing, I have the capability to convince people that I have no idea who she is.

As I've written before, my siblings and I are bi-racial with a white mom and a black dad. If it's not obvious, my mom's side the family is all white while my dad's side of the family is all black.

Basically, we're the glue that connects the two races in our family. As I've also mentioned before, I've grown up with my mom's side of the family.

All my cousins went to the same schools as me, well when I wasn't cyber schooled. We played on the same sports teams, rode the same bus and live six minutes away from each other. To us, we were all the same, some of us were just a little darker than others. It never really hit me that we were cousins until people tried to tell us we weren't and that was the first of many things that happen when you look nothing like your cousins:

1. You have a best friend.

Giphy

I mean, we're cousins, right? That's a built-in best friend.

2. People never believe you when you say you're cousins.

Giphy

Actually, we are. Our mom's are sisters.

3. When they realize you're not joking and they try to do the math.

Giphy

Don't strain yourself too much.

4. Sometimes your cousins look more like your mom's kids than you do.

Giphy

It doesn't bother me, I just find it amusing, especially when my mom does something embarrassing and I have the capability to convince people that I have no idea who she is.

5. Sharing clothing isn't always easy.

Giphy

Colors that look good on one of us, don't usually look great on the other.

6. No matching hairstyles

Giphy

We can try, but it's not going to work when we have completely opposite types of hair.

7. We always have colorful pictures.

Giphy

Be careful who you say that around, they might not like that.

8. Side dishes are quite different.

Giphy

On my dad's side, they're all about the greens and sweet potatoes, both of which, I want nothing to do with. On my mom's side, the only greens we have are cucumbers.

9. We look like a blended family.

Giphy

Add in my brother's (Asian) best friend and wait for all the stares of people trying to figure out how we all fit.

10. There's a whole other level of jokes we can make.

Giphy

I'll leave it at that.

11. You seem totally cool when both sides of the family show up for your game.

Giphy

Which side of the family did he get his dunking ability? In my family, that's an easy question, definitely not my mom.

12. In the words of Sister Sledge, "we are family."

Giphy

We may look nothing alike and draw stares, but who wants to be boring?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
