Around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, Stefani Lineva was tragically found dead on Route 434. Stefani was a first-semester transfer student at Binghamton University. She was a loved member of the Binghamton Women's Tennis Team, who has been said to have an outstanding and beautiful personality.
When such a tragic event strikes so close to home, people are whipped into reality. The sense of community on the campus since Lineva was identified has been astounding. The support that teachers, students, and faculty are offering to students who are having a difficult time coping with the tragedy is beyond expectations. Everyone has truly come together to support one another in the wake of one of the most tragic losses the university has experienced.
Even students who did not personally know Lineva have had a hard time coping with her death. We all like to think we are invincible, which is clearly not the case. The death of a 20-year-old girl who walked amongst us every day, sat with us in class, ate with us in the dining hall, and played on a court for us to watch is difficult to wrap one's head around. The parents of Binghamton students are also grieving, because one set of parents have been told the unfathomable news that no parent ever wants to hear.
The fact that something so disturbing could happen so close to our school is scary. Many students have had the response that "this could have been any one of us." Everyone is coming together to improve safety amongst Binghamton students. We are all here for each other during this difficult time.
A Binghamton student stated, "This sudden and tragic news has saddened me and has made me think about mine and my friends' safety. This could have been anyone, and it's scary that we live in such a cruel world. I send my condolences to the friends and family of Stefani and will be praying for them during this impossibly difficult time as the holidays approach. Hopefully the evil person behind this unthinkable act is found and punished."
The incident is being further investigated. The President of Binghamton University has offered a cash award to anyone who has any details on this trauma. The entire community is struggling with those loss of Stefani. You hear about tragedies happening all the time, but you never think it will happen to someone you know or someone so close to you. May Stefani rest in the sweetest peace, and may her friends and family find the strength to deal with this unfortunate event.
A FaceBook post from President Stenger stated, "Counseling for affected students is available through the University Counseling Center (UCC) during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, at 607-777-2772.
