Young Justice
Ah, finally something for the nerds. What? did you think I was only going to do stuff like sitcoms, and cooking shows, hah, the hell with that! No show is safe from my damnable opinions. And for this show, I have some pretty damnable opinions. Warning: the opinions of this show are classified as 'damnable' please read at your own risk. First things first, please remove any notions of this being, "a dumb kids show" until you read the rest of the review. Even if you do believe it is a show for children, I hope I can convince you otherwise.
Young justice, I'll say it right now, is a pretty good show. Warner Brothers has already made some great animated DC hero shows. Remember Batman: the Animated Series? Yeah, that was pretty good. How about Justice League? Oh man, that was a good show! By the way, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited are currently both on Netflix if you want to check them out after Young Justice. Well Warner Brothers animation has done it again with this edgy show that follows the sidekicks of the greatest DC super heroes. When I say edgy, I mean its pretty edgy. It's not 'Sonic the Hedgehog' edgy but its still pretty cool.
Right off the bat, we're introduced to several members of the Young Justice team: Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad (oh and if you have some hang ups about Aquaman and his sidekick Aqualad being lame heroes, prepared to be thoroughly surprised because these guys are seriously cool). Through a series of events, they came to form a team that performs covert ops to prevent evil schemes locally and internationally. Yeah, I said 'covert ops'. This show isn't your run of the mill superheroes that fight supervillians show, it's more along the lines of a Navy Seal SWAT team but it's super heroes secretly preventing villainy around the world. In the first season, there are several superheroes the exploits center around: Aquaman, Kid flash, Robin, Super-Boy, Miss Martian, and Artemis (female Green Arrow sidekick). And they get into some pretty crazy stuff, let me tell you.
The story of the show is exceedingly great. The tone is usually bittersweet with the sense that good has prevailed in the end, but there's an ominous tone looming and drawing you in for the next episode. Characters are well-defined and experience development throughout the series. As young adults, they face social interactions alongside the other action that make the show believable and relatable. Overall, the tone is set for a more mature audience, but with language that allows for all ages. The animation quality matches the quality of the story. The style of the characters is modernized and edgy. Honestly, this show is as cool as the live action DC shows that aired on the WB (I miss Seventh Heaven).
There's only one real problem with the show: It ends with an ungodly cliffhanger. Here is the problem, "Young Justice" aired on Cartoon Network for two seasons and was cancelled before finishing the over arching story-line that spans the first two seasons. It is speculated that because the show was funded by Mattel and toy sales were low, funding was cut and the show was cancelled. However, this shouldn't steer you away from checking it out though because it's still a great series. Show Creator, Greg Wiesman, has stated on his Twitter page that Netflix might back him for a third season if they see enough support for the show; which is one more reason you should watch it.
Overall, "Young Justice" gets a great score. The animation and story are great. It's definitely worth the watch if you're a DC and general comic book fan. However, if you're completely over traditional animation and superhero shows, then the show is obviously not for you, which is a shame because you could still probably find something worthwhile from the show. All in all, "Young Justice" is a great show with the fatal flaw of ending too soon.
Score 4/5
