I used to love Bill Nye when I was a kid and I still admire him because he manages to teach many kids about science, but I don't believe Bill Nye is advocating the "science guy" we once knew.
A lot of his points are true and meaningful to learn! However, in his episodes, I often felt like I was watching the show to be brainwashed rather than be educated.
It's almost as if his episodes are slowly exposing us to new inventions that otherwise millennial and generations before would be unlikely to grasp, like AI or Artificial Intelligence. It's no doubt that the millennial audience is what Bill Nye intends to reach most.
In one of his episodes, he addresses the topic of Artificial Intelligence, which is "the intelligence given by machines." In some ways, this invention of artificial intelligence can make our lives easier through simple tasks like a thermostat adjusting itself without the need of human assistance. Other capabilities include these machines understanding human speech and self-driven cars. The set backs of this invention are things that only humans can do like reasoning, planning, and perception.
So, we are essentially creating machines to mimic the actions of humans. In little ways, the public and shows like Bill Nye Saves the World, are exposing us to the early stages of AI. Even though Artificial Intelligence has been a discovery since the 1950's and somehow we are just now experiencing the invention for ourselves.
The real timeline of our technology advancement has been hidden under the rug for years, and now we are taking a huge step towards a scientific history of actually installing these new inventions into our daily lives, all while not knowing the possible outcomes.
I've always been an individual to question everything that society does, it's even in my job description as a journalist at the University of Arizona. So to automatically believe EVERYTHING that Bill Nye says is foolish because it's only one perspective of science, but it's definitely a start for the uneducated public.
So, when Bill Nye starts advocating for things like AI inventions it makes me question-- is this something he is being endorsed to do or is it his actual opinion that these man-made machines will indeed make our lives better?
My main point in writing this article was to show a different perspective of Bill Nye's show. I believe what he's doing is a great thing for education, but in the same light, there's material in his show that sways from education and steers more toward political agendas. Can we really trust what he has to say? And if not, who can we trust for scientific information?
Learning to question everything society has to offer, aside from political affiliations, is part of being a citizen of this nation. Don't believe everything you hear or everything you are being told to advocate for. The world is changing and it's happening now; a lot faster than most would think.
