To My Big Sister

"She's my sister, my best friend, my soul mate & the best part of me"

To My Big Sister

Although we don’t always get along and see eye-to-eye, you will always be the one I look up to. I hope that I can grow up to be half the person that you are one day. I admire your hard working self-determination and wish I had that sometimes. While growing up together I always wanted what you had and in some ways that is still true. When we were small, you never really wanted us to dress the same because I was “copying you”, but some days you dealt with it because I wanted to. I will always appreciate your determination to get things done and your loyalty to the people you care about, more than anyone could explain.

You were basically my first friend and you will also be my lifetime friend. No matter how different our lives are, you are always right there when I need someone. You tell me how it is, whether it is something that I want to hear or not, which I know is the best policy. You always know what to say when I’m not feeling the best and when I feel like I have no one else to talk to. Thank you for always being patient with me.

I know how hard it is to have a positive attitude sometimes, but you have always helped me look at the bright side of things. We’ve prayed together while holding hands in church thinking about all we have to be thankful for. You have no idea how much I appreciate all of our little memories throughout our lives and not a day goes by that I don’t think about them. When we used to play our little games in the snow and go sledding down the hill at home, every single day I think about how lucky I am to have grown up with my best friend.

There will also be those days when we can’t seem to stop arguing and might not want to be around each other, but all relationships have their faults. I know that we are the type of people that will apologize if we had a fight and forgive each other, which is really all that matters. In the big scheme of things, arguing about letting me borrow a shirt, or little criticisms are not at all important. Now that I am mostly on my own, I realize what really matters, loving each other even through the hard times in life, picking each other up in hard times, and encouraging each other to keep going once we’ve been knocked down. I am so thankful that you’ve always done that for me.

Thank you for always picking up the phone when I had a long day and just need to vent, thank you for always telling me things are going to be okay even when I’ve maybe lost hope, and thank you for teaching me how to be a good person throughout life. You are strong and beautiful, you have worked so hard throughout your life and you deserve every piece of happiness and positivity that comes your way. As long as I have you, I will always have a lifelong friend. You are so appreciated and loved, I hope you know how much I love you.

Love,

Your little sister, Kenna

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
