Why Is Beyoncé's New Album, "Lemonade," So Important?

This album was worth the wait. Her HBO special, "Lemonade," was beyond what was expected with meaningful, raw, and gut-wrenching poetry introducing each song. However, the complexity of this album needs to be addressed. This album expresses what it feels like to be a black woman in today's society, her private thoughts, her relationship with her husband, racial and social injustices, and overcoming struggle (as all of the tracks narrate the process of anger to grief to forgiveness). All of these ideas are explored while introducing us to a new musical styling of Beyoncé that we've never heard before. This album is by far her most artistic and honest, yet. For a closer look into the track list, here are a full summary of each song on her new album, "Lemonade," and why there's so much more to them than her other songs on the radio right now:

1. "Pray You Catch Me"

Key lyrics: "Constantly aware of it all, my lonely ear, pressed against the walls of your world"

This brave and personal narrative kicks off the album in the best way. In this song, she introduces the pain she feels from her husband when he wrongs her, lies to her, and leaves her alone in her thoughts. Musically, this is a ballad that we have not heard from Beyoncé before. Her influences for this album are completely different from any of her other music, which is refreshing to see such a radio-present artist testing the waters this much, and then ultimately succeeding.

2. "Hold Up"

Key lyrics: "What a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you."

Beyoncé sings this star-studded track (as so many artists were sampled as well as helped in the production) while swinging a baseball bat (with the engraved, "Hot Sauce," that has been expressed many a time since, "Formation," was released) around the streets of New Orleans. This is just the tip of the iceberg on her, "anger," phase within the visual album. In this song, Bey declares she is tired of being walked all over and doesn't care that she looks, "jealous or crazy." This song also hints at the reality of being a black woman in today's society and within relationships. Black women are much more likely to take the responsibility of a relationship into their own hands rather than reach out to other sources for help or guidance, as evidence from domestic abuse statistics. This is because of the racial injustices they experience on a daily basis and the need to protect their community. Beyoncé expresses this anger and results to violence within her video as a means of taking care of her own issues she has with her partner.

3. "Don't Hurt Yourself" (featuring Jack White)

Key lyrics: "You ain't married to no average bitch, boy."

This song is the craziest, most honest, and most unexpected, out of the entire album. With Jack White's help, she was able to create this frantic, emotionally charged, and wild, song that explores a side of Bey we haven't seen since, "Ring the Alarm." Again, the act of aggressively warning her partner and handling her own business is evidence of the racial and gender inter-sectionality within the album. Rocking the, "Yeezy," clothing line, she addresses these issues and accuses her husband of infidelity, showing the rest of the world she is not to be reckoned with, musically or otherwise.

4. "Sorry"

Key lyrics: "You better call Becky with the good hair."

"Sorry," is the song that has stirred up the most controversy. The song tells the story of a Bey that has had enough of relationship drama and is ready to go out with her ladies. However, the fun, "middle-fingers up," attitude hits the wall when she slips that she not only regrets marrying her husband, but outs her desire to take her child and leave with nothing but a note goodbye. The emotional exhaustion she feels continued when she uttered the most confusing words to the outside world: "You better call Becky with the good hair." This is the line that motivated all of the world to search high and low in order to find the woman who possibly caused all the drama between her and her husband, Jay-Z.

5. "6-Inch" (featuring The Weekend)

Key lyrics: "She too smart to crave material things, she pushing herself day and night."

For this track, The Weeknd joins in and totally rocks it. This song is personally my favorite on the album and unlike some of the previous tracks, subtly, introduces a woman who knows her business, works for her money, and doesn't take any crap from anyone, all while rocking some killer heels. In the visual album, Bey is seen burning down a house, or really a bedroom. This alludes further to cheating allegations with her husband, and burning down their room because its been ruined by another woman. The red filtered footage seen in this video is mystical, seductive, secretive, and sensual, as she kills it yet again with this track.

6. "Daddy Lessons"

Key lyrics: "When trouble comes to town, and men like me come around, Oh, my daddy said, 'shoot.'"

In the visual album, a poem introduces the video. The poem contains references to physical abuse by (who is referenced in the following song) her father, who she has been estranged from for some time now. Although those rumors have been put to rest by Mr. Knowles himself, there is still some speculation due to the interesting relationship she describes having with her father. Musically, this song is much different than anything she's done in her career. The country-twag, creole, emphasis in this song puts a staple in her connections to the city and her heritage which has been wonderfully influencing her last two albums.

7. "Love Drought"

Key lyrics: "I don't care about the lights or the beams, spend my life in the dark for the sake of you and me."

The video contains some of the most captivating shots of Beyoncé and her dancers in the Bayou, as well as wearing Laolu Senbanjo's traditional African body art. This art is, said by Senbanjo himself, an attempt to reconnect with one's culture. Some traditions in Africa were ushered away with new religions gaining popularity, as they see some African cultures as, "too dark." Beyoncé uses her visual album to resurface these traditions as they are truly a beautiful part of a forgotten culture. The song itself is written as a ballad in which she forgives her partner for the pain they have caused her. This is the first look into the more somber and hopeful emotional phases she experiences as the tracks continue.

8. "Sandcastles"

Key lyrics: "What is it about you that I can't erase, baby?"

This gut-wrenching ballad confirms the forgiveness she feels towards her partner and their constant broken promises. This is Jay-Z's first appearance in the visual album, even though literally every song has had several references to her husband and their issues with each other. As a black woman in today's society, Bey displays her loyalty to her family and her willingness to look past any obstacle to keep her life, her family, and herself together, despite all the outsiders' curiosity and hurtful objections she sees on a daily basis. This influence in her album is hopeful and very real for the black female community, as expressed by many articles recently published.

9. "Forward" (featuring James Blake)

Key lyrics: "It's time to listen, it's time to fight."

The shortest, yet the most powerful in the album. Co-performed and co-written by James Blake, the song is a somber dedication of the black male lives lost in the fight for racial equality and the strong mothers who raised them. The video contains the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and others, as they hold portraits of their sons. The song declares that it's time to remember the tragedy in our history as we move forward in the fight for total equality.

10. "Freedom" (featuring Kendrick Lamar)

Key lyrics: "I break chains all by myself, won't let my freedom rot in hell."

Kendrick Lamar joins in as Beyoncé belts her perspective of racial and social injustices. This song is a continuance of the themes within the album and does an excellent job as musically it is strong, influential, and bold, as it attacks important issues our society struggles with. I think we can all agree that this album will be endlessly praised for Bey's courage, strength, and motivation, to represent her community and further the fight for total equality.

11. "All Night"

Key lyrics: "Found the truth beneath your lies, and true love never has to hide."

Beautiful, vocally and lyrically, "All Night," is one for the books. This song puts a seal on the forgiveness Beyoncé feels towards her husband for his wrongs mentioned in previous tracks. The video includes adorable home videos of the Carter's with little Blue Ivy as Bey belts what true love means to her, and how no matter what trouble she encounters, she will always love her family and find forgiveness through the hurt. Though many argue she shouldn't have placed her personal life in the public eye, this album has become an exceptional message for the world to hear. Through all the aggression in this world, finding forgiveness and love is the only way to escape the evils of the world. With redemption, we move forward.

12. "Formation"

Key lyrics: "I just might be a black Bill Gates in the making."

Probably the only radio hit off of the album, and that's totally OK. Normally, Bey has several hits lined up to keep us pumped all summer. However, this album was beautifully written, produced, and performed. The album covered ground on racial inequality while emotionally slaying her audience with her captivating performance. This song was just a glimpse of Beyoncé claiming her ethnicity, gender and life, while motivating the public to take a stand and raise awareness of the injustices in the world. Beyoncé went above and beyond in this album and will never be forgotten as possibly the best performer of our time.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

132694

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
