Friday marks an important day in history, the day when same sex marriage was legalized in all 50 states by the Supreme Court. As the news circulates Facebook and other social media platforms, it is apparent just how many people are in favor of this ruling. The love and support from those who are in favor of this is overwhelming. Same sex marriage is something that has needed to be ruled in favor of since it originally became a hot topic. These aren’t homosexual rights - they’re simply human rights.
Many have argued that this will destroy the sanctity of marriage, but that’s untrue. This will simply help us move forward as a society. Justice Kennedy even said, "It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."
As American people, we are supposed to stand for diversity, love, and acceptance. To deny someone of their rights goes against everything this country was built on. This ruling is a step in the right direction towards progress for the American people.
Unfortunately, not everyone is in favor of this ruling. Although today marks an important day in history, it also marks one of the days when we are able to see just how hateful humans can be. As opposed to being accepting, like we’ve been taught to do from a young age, people have begun to spread hate throughout the Internet. People are hiding behind their computer screens and keyboards in an attempt to ruin someone else’s happiness by shaming these people for a ruling that is a huge success in the LGBT community. There are people who are allowing their own close-minded opinions to influence how they react towards this ruling. Even though something may not be relevant to your own life, don't forget that it could play a huge role in someone else's. We are forgetting the most important part of this entire case: it is dealing with actual human beings.
This isn’t a case that deals with something such as gun control, an illegal drugs, or anything like that. This is a ruling that affects the lives of so many people and finally gives them some of the rights that they should’ve been allowed in the first place. That’s why this case is so important to recognize as a huge step in the right direction for human rights.
As humans, we need to be able to put aside our differences in order to come together as a successful group. If we ever want to be able to make an impact on our lives, and the lives of others, we need to learn how to be tolerant. We don’t necessarily have to accept everything that goes against what we want for ourselves, but we do need to be tolerant, especially when it comes to the rights of other humans. If people were able to put aside their differences for even one minute, the world would be a much better place.
