If you’re a true Taylor fan, you bought the new CD the day it dropped. It’s been out for a little over a week now and I’m here to tell you it was worth every penny. I remember riding with my mom to go purchase "Fearless" in the fall of 2008 when I was a freshman in high school. The excitement I experienced last week when going to pick up "1989" was comparable to what I experienced as a 15-year-old listening to “You Belong With Me” for the first time.
If you don’t want to spend the $9.99 it costs to buy the album, I’ll save you some time and money by providing you with a list of the five best songs on the album. I’m going to assume that you already have “Shake It Off” in your iTunes library. If you don’t, I’m judging you.
1. "Blank Space"
This song is extremely catchy. I was beginning to sing along with the words before the song was even over. You can tell by the lyrics that Taylor has grown up and away from her fairytale 16-year-old way of thinking.
"Got a long list of ex lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
’Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game"
2. "Style"
This is the kind of song you’d blast on a long drive. Sing as loud as you can, even if you’re awful (like me). Also take note that the name of this song is, um, similar to that of an ex boyfriend. Subtle Taylor, subtle.
"You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style."
3. "This Love"
This is the “All Too Well” of 1989. I personally love the slow Taylor songs, so if you do too, this is a must for your list.
"Your kiss, my cheek
I watched you leave
Your smile, my ghost
I fell to my knees
When you’re young, you just run
But you come back to what you need."
4. "All You Had To Do Was Stay"
This is a classic heart broken Taylor song. She calls out the boy (because of course it was his fault) and we sing along to every word.
"People like you always want back the love they pushed aside
But people like me are gone forever when you say goodbye."
5. "Out of the Woods"
The song has been out as a single for a few weeks now. This is the catchiest song on the album, complete with another reference to ex boyfriend. Well played, Taylor. We all wish we could dis an ex this publicly, but let’s face it, we’ll never be you.
"We were built to fall apart
Then fall back together
Your necklace hanging from my neck
The night we couldn’t quite forget
When we decided to move the furniture so we could dance
Baby like we stood a chance."
Enjoy Taylor fans! Remember to sing your heart out to each and every one.
