Finally, the month of November is here! Whether your favorite part about this time of the year is the weather, the holidays, the decorations, or the food; I think everyone gets just a little bit happier once the month of November rolls around. For college kids, we are all at that point in the semester where studying for that test, going for that run, or even just getting out of bed seems to just be too daunting of a task. However, when all hope seems to be running out and everyone is running on fumes, our saving grace of Thanksgiving break kicks in.
Thanksgiving is that one holiday as a little kid that we tended to look over. We were all either still in a sugar coma from Halloween or we skipped right over Thanksgiving and really just could not wait for that Jolly Ole' Saint Nick to come, so Thanksgiving often got overlooked. Yeah, we were excited about the food, but we lived with our families still and for the most part, it was just a normal day together, except with 5 times the food. However, once you go off to college, you truly learn the value of Thanksgiving.
Coming home for Thanksgiving break from college may be the best break of the year. You are exhausted from school, probably getting sick from constantly being around people, you have not had a good home cooked meal since God knows when, and all-in-all just genuinely need a break. Once you get home you realize truly how lucky you are. You get to come home to a warm and loving household and spend time with your friends and family that you used to take for granted. You have a full week to completely unwind. You are finally able to clear your head of all your school stresses, have your mom take care of you and your 'terrible' cold, and most importantly, stuff your face with some of the greatest and unhealthiest foods you can imagine. Thanksgiving is one of the holidays, in my opinion, that you truly begin to appreciate with age. You never realized how great it was to sit in the living room with your family by a fire and just talk- talk about anything and everything. As a kid, this was boring and a typical day, but as a college kid, this really can be one of the highlights of your break.
So this Thanksgiving break, do not overlook the greatness of this holiday. Take the time to appreciate your friends, family, home, and of course, the food. Not everyone is as fortunate as you or me to call where we call home, home. So give thanks, and unwind. You and your family have earned it.
