As I begin to dabble into the world of folk music, I can't help but hear some of The Lumineer's music when I come across new playlists. It has recently been brought to my attention that this band has more than a few songs that are absolutely outstanding. Here are a handful that should definitely be recognized:
8. Slow It Down
"Tie up your scarf real tight, these boys are out for blood tonight".
Slow but enticing to say the least. It's one of those songs you play while you're out camping or in the wilderness, taking in the beauty of the nature surrounding you.
7. Flowers In Your Hair
"It's a long road to wisdom, it's a short one to being ignored."
Despite being short, it still carries that passion hidden away in every one of their songs.
6. Stubborn Love
"The highway signs say we're close, but I don't read those things anymore".
Your typical love ballad that needs to be featured on every album. Once again, The Lumineers use both their gift in singing and song writing to make a song seem powerful and uplifting.
5. Angela
"You held your course to some distant war in the corners of your mind."
One of the those songs where the music is upbeat, but the lyrics are deep and meaningful. This is always a fun tune to blast with the windows down.
4. Cleopatra
"And I left the footprints, the mud stained the carpet, and it hardened like my heart did when you left town."
The first time I heard this line, I knew the song would be special to me. To this day, I still believe that this is one of the most beautiful lines of lyrics I've ever come across. When artists make music in this generation, all they seem to care about is catchy beats and whether or not it'll make them a decent amount of cash. But this song is truly something else. You can tell the band took their time with it and poured their hearts and souls into the lyrics.
3. Gun Song
"Things I knew when I was young, some were true and some were wrong."
Your typical tune where the singer would change their ways in order to win someone's heart. It's interesting to see the band tackle a topic like this because most artists try their best to avoid concepts that are controversial in their music.
2. Dead Sea
"I don't gamble, but if I did I would bet on us."
One of those beautiful songs talking about love and risking it all for one another. The light guitar and rough voice really brings the tune together, exemplifying The Lumineer's "folk" sound.
1. Sleep On The Floor
"Forget what Father Brennan said, were were not born in sin. Leave a note on the bed, let your mother know you're safe."
By far the best song that The Lumineers have come out with to this day (I am extremely biased). The concept of the song is so intriguing, talking about making leaps of faith and going with your gut. But despite making irrational decisions, it still has a sense of empathy hidden in its lyrics. This tune is perfect for those who have a bad case of wanderlust.
