Disney World, located in Orlando, Florida, is often identified as "the happiest place on Earth". After spending a week there for the fourth time, I can confirm that it is the most magical place I've ever been. There are five theme parks, two water parks, and other attractions which can be quite a lot to cover in just a week. So, here are my favorite rides, shows, and dining choices all categorized by theme park, that are simply a must.
Animal Kingdom
1. Expedition Everest
This rollercoaster is such a thrilling ride. While waiting in line, there are artifacts, photos, and props to the search of the infamous It's my favorite ride in all of Disney World, as it never fails to flip my stomach (in the best way possible). If you don't like coasters, this attraction isn't for you. Perhaps something more subtle, such as the Kilimanjaro Safari ride or the Kali River Rapids, will be better suited for you.
2. The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic
I was never a huge fan of this Disney story, but the nighttime show is incredible. Whether you're old or young, this is a great way to spend one of your nights.
3. Rainforest Cafe
Okay, so Rainforest Cafe is not a Disney-park exclusive, but the atmosphere is fun and the food is familiar. You can't go wrong with any of the main course options, and the fancy ice cream volcano is a tasty way to end your meal.
Epcot
1. Soarin'
Hate flying or heights? Then don't put yourself on this ride. It takes you on a hang-gliding adventure over various landmarks across the world including the Great Wall of China, the Alps, the Taj Mahal, and many others. The visuals are breathtaking, and when you enter certain environments, scented air is filtered through vents for an added special effect. In short, this ride is awesome.
2. IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth
Another firework show that features the countries located in the park and includes a past-present-future show that celebrates humanity. Again, guests of all ages can enjoy this 12-minute nightly spectacular.
3. La Hacienda de San Angel
Located in Mexico's section of Epcot, this restaurant is located inside a temple. There are Mexican souvenirs in the market-style store, as well as a short ride in a boat through a Mexican version of "It's a Small World". The food is not Americanized, so if you're looking for strong flavor, this is not an ideal place to dine. Despite the different flavors, the food is delicious and will leave you stuffed.
Magic Kingdom
1. Space Mountain
There are a variety of coasters and smaller movie-themed rides at Magic Kingdom, but my personal favorite is the zippy Space Mountain. The crazy drops and sudden jerks keep riders laughing until the end, and, as a roller coaster fanatic, I have to admit that it is difficult to keep your composure on this ride. If you aren't a coaster fan, there are smaller rides and attractions based on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Lilo and Stitch, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh, Aladdin, and Toy Story, to name a few. For most guests, Cinderella's Castle is also a popular stop. Needless to say, Magic Kingdom has something for all ages and preferences.
2. Main Street USA Electrical Parade
By far, this is the best show Disney offers. The sidewalks of Main Street USA are always jam packed with children and adults alike who are ready to enjoy a parade of Disney's most popular movie characters. The street is lit up with lights and blinking Mickey/Minnie ears. I was fortunate enough to march in this parade with my high school's band my freshman year. It was surreal; unlike the annual Memorial Day Parade our marching band leads, this parade was long, hot, and surrounded by a huge amount of people who were expecting only the best. If you visit Disney at a different time of year, however, the parade is still an awesome experience.
3. Plaza Ice Cream Parlor
When visiting Florida, ice cream is pretty much a guaranteed treat. The ice cream served at this cute shop is the perfect refreshment after waiting in long, hot, crowded lines or for a mid-afternoon snack before dinner. Besides, who doesn't like ice cream?!
Hollywood Studios
1. Tower of Terror or Rock 'n' Roller Coaster
Hollywood Studios is my favorite park in Disney because there are two exciting rides. One is a giant version of "Downtime" often found in smaller amusement parks- Tower of Terror. This ride takes you up to your 'hotel room' in a giant elevator, and then when you least expect it, drops you stories at a time and shoots you back up. The only downside to this ride is the length, as it ends pretty quickly. Rock 'n' roller coaster, a crazy, high-speed coaster, is another one of my favorites in Hollywood Studios. I can't decide which ride is better, but Rock 'n' roller coaster is the definition of thrilling. It is an Aerosmith-based ride that takes off suddenly before flipping you upside down at top speeds.
2. Fantasmic!
This show is portrayed as Mickey's dream, in which he battles good and evil. Water is sprayed upwards in a fan shape, creating an awesome background for the projection of clips of the dream. Additionally, floats with all of the Disney characters pass by and acrobats perform incredible stunts while Mickey fights off the evil. Behind Magic Kingdom's parade, this is my favorite non-ride attraction.
3. 50's Prime Time Café
I ate here with my family last week on our vacation, and although the menu wasn't too appealing to me, the atmosphere made up for it. The waiters and waitresses are trained to act like part of your 1950s family and tease you. To start our dinner, our waiter literally threw our plates, silverware, and napkins at my cousin Vincent and said "get off your phone and set the table!" Luckily we were warned about their role so we knew what to expect, but there was a couple next to us who clearly had no idea what they were getting into and when they were demanded to set the table, they looked absolutely mortified. It was a great night of laughs and family time, and as long as you're prepared for it, a meal at this restaurant can be a great time.
