If you're tired of watching the same old holiday fare on Christmas but still want to pretend you're trying, never fear! Here's a list of some of the best movies only tangentially related to Christmas.
"Die Hard" (1988)
A classic about violence taking place right at Christmastime. "Ho, ho, ho, now I have a machine gun," just gets me in the Christmas spirit right away.
"Rent" (2005)
The movie based off the Broadway musical is set largely at Christmas. Despite its mature themes and sexy songs, the film's themes of love and acceptance actually fit quite well with the Christmas spirit.
"Lord of the Rings" trilogy (2001-2003)
We've got an old man with a beard, extreme weather, elves, and a drawn-out attempt to return jewelry. Sounds like Christmas to me.
"March of the Penguins"(2005)
Maybe this Christmas you've just had it with people and would rather watch penguins waddle across ice while listening to the soothing tones of Morgan Freeman. Or perhaps you would like something educational. Either way, can't go wrong with penguins.
"Ice Storm" (1997)
Cold weather and dysfunctional families. Need I say more?
"Frozen" (2013)
This instant classic should keep the kids entertained, though you might regret it after the 100th rendition of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?"
"Day After Tomorrow" (2004)
If you're bummed you aren't getting a white Christmas, this disaster film should help.
"Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" (2005)
Not only is there a lot of snow in Narnia but the clear Christian themes tie in well with the Christmas story. This would be a great alternative choice for families.
"Edward Scissorhands" (1990)
This film concludes in winter months, plus the main character would be very effective at ripping apart wrapping paper.
"Gremlins" (1984)
Set during the holidays and featuring small trouble-makers.
"Batman Returns" (1992)
Another non-Christmas film set during Christmas. We've got rich dudes, penguins, and a troublesome cat. Or characters close enough to those descriptions to slap on the Christmas label.
"Iron Man 3" (2013)
Taking place right around the holidays, this film offers plucky kids, irritated girlfriends, guys in red suits, and poorly chosen gifts.
" Star Wars"
All of them. Because now seems like the perfect time for a marathon, am I right?
