The controversial and highly debated Academy Awards are over. Choices were made, things were said, and we were left with a list of winners that many, including myself, found to be skewed and unsatisfactory. But I'm going to stay out of politics for now and try to make this whole thing as simple as possible. So here are the REAL best movies of the year despite what anyone in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would have you believe.
Moana
Definitely better than frozen but I was pissed Lilo and Stitch never showed up.
10 Cloverfield lane
Fricken nuts. Especially with virtually two actors and a seemingly basic plot. 10 Cloverfield Lane is the kidnap movie all kidnap movies should strive to be.
Arrival
If you dig alien movies and like getting your mind blown then this is the movie for you. It's like Inception level mind blowing with an intergalactic twist.
Doctor Strange
Second best comic book movie of the year no doubt and the absolute best special effects to ever grace my corneas. Benedict Cumberbatch is an absolute dog and we get to see a different, previously unexplored area of the Marvel universe.
Deadpool
I shouldn’t have to say why this is on here.
Probably the fourth or fifth best Star Wars movie of all time and if it weren’t for all the lame, two dimensional characters it could have been second or third. But yeah definitely a grand old time in a galaxy far far away. Plus I’m always down for some Darth Vader action.
Sully
Sully was the bees knees and quite frankly deserved much more recognition. Not only did americas sweetheart Tom Hanks rock it in a gnarly mustache, he also put on his best show since Toy Story 2.
Manchester by the sea
This movie was dramatic af. But like a good dramatic. Pretty simple story but killer acting and directing make it crazy interesting. Even though it is dumb dramatic.
Moonlight
Moonlight confronts stinging social issues with grace and confidence unlike any film I’ve ever seen. It delves into the emotions of individuals with poignant awareness but never overplays the drama. However, "best movie of the year" is not synonymous with "movie that confronts social issues the most dramatically". Is it an exceptional, landmark piece of cinema? Yes. Is it the finest display of writing, acting, directing, sound and visual editing, and production of the past year? No.
La la Land
La la Land is by far the best film of 2016. Not surprisingly it has an overwhelming mass of haters as most great works of art do. Don't listen to them. People who don't like La La Land are pompous theater assholes who think, since it wasn't on broadway first and didn't include actors trained in the traditional art of musical theater, that it can't be a good movie. Yeah because movies and on stage musicals are the same thing. The movie was fire get over it. Not too musical-y with sharp, dialogue, exceptional performances, and on point direction. It's a 21st century love story unique for its time while still honoring its influences of the past. Best movie of the year and maybe for years to come. Even if you're not into musicals I assure you it rocks.
