Due to the Netflix revolution, it’s getting harder and harder to encourage audiences to go to movie theaters instead of staying at home. However, this also reflects that people will go to movies IF the movie is worth seeing. Sorry The Expendables 3, but you’ll have to do a little more than combine a bunch of old action heroes for the third time to make a good movie.
So basically, the movies that grossed the most during this past year reflect the movies that America considered to be worth watching. Keep reading to find out the ten highest grossing movies in the United States for 2014.
10. The Amazing Spiderman 2 – Being at the top of this list features some very important figures for Hollywood. Since this movie unexpectedly finished at number ten, the franchise has been put on hold! We may never see another Andrew Garfield as Spiderman movie just because they’re at the bottom of the top ten!
9. Big Hero 6 – This is an animated movie that features a diverse set of heroes. It's one of Marvel’s lesser-known properties, which helps prove that people roll out for Marvel movies.
8. Dawn of Planet of the Apes – This is the sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which coincidentally failed to make it into the box office’s top ten when it premiered. This is another sequel that out performed its predecessor.
7. X-Men: Days of Future Past – This is the first X-Men movie to make it into the top ten since X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. Since this movie combined the young and old X-Men, expect more of that in the next installment, X-Men: Apocalypse.
6. Maleficent – Since this movie successfully told the story of the evil fairy Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, maybe Hollywood will finally get around to making Wicked into a movie. Hopefully, this success will translate to Disney’s live-action Cinderella.
5. Transformers: Age of Extinction – The future for Transformers looks bright with new star Mark Wahlberg. This franchise isn’t going anywhere.
4. The Lego Movie – This was the highest grossing animated movie of the year! This comes as a big surprise, as it performed far better than How To Train Your Dragon 2.
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – The sequel to Captain America blew the competition away. With it’s success, fans have Avengers: Age of Ultron to look forward to in 2015.
2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 – Even though it is the second highest grossing movie of the year, the third Hunger Games has not succeeded the numbers from Catching Fire. However, there’s still Mockingjay Part 2.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy – With a surprise, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy finished with the top spot fin 2014. Who would’ve thought that a movie adapted from an obscure comic book that features a gang of misfits and outlaws would finish first?
Now will 2015 end with a Marvel, Star Wars or Hunger Games movie taking the top spot?
