At the end of each year, many people start reminiscing about the best moments from pop culture. Just to name a few in 2019: the Jonas Brothers reunited and went on tour, the Game of Thrones finale shocked fans worldwide, TikTok took over everyone's screen time, and so much more.
There were a lot of things that made 2019 so great, but if you're like me and spend too much time online, the internet memes were some of the best to date. Here are some of the greatest meme moments from 2019.
Sorry To This Man
In a Vanity Fair interview, Keke Palmer took a lie detector test and was given a picture of a celebrity. Palmer responded, "I hate to say it -I hope I don't sound ridiculous- I don't know who this man is. I mean, he could be walking down the street and I wouldn't know a thing. Sorry to this man." Immediately, internet users started captioning it in reference to ex-friends and old relationships.
Kombucha Girl
Kombucha Girl, or @brittany_broski, became a viral sensation from TikTok. She posted a video of her trying kombucha for the first time, and her initial reaction was all over Twitter seemingly overnight.
Woman Yelling At Cat
The woman depicted in the meme is a cast member from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and essentially the meme follows ironic arguments where one person is very worked-up and the other is somewhat mellow.
Paul Rudd on Hot Ones
Paul Rudd appeared on Hot Ones, and at one point during the interview while eating spicy hot wings, he says, "Hey, look at us! Who would've thought? Not me!" On Twitter, users started using it to refer to things that surprised them such as long-term relationship break-ups and passing difficult classes in college.
OK Boomer
In a speech about climate change, 25-year-old lawmaker Chlöe Swarbrick shut down an older member by responding mid-sentence with, "ok, boomer." Immediately, this became used as a response to "when I was your age" debates and a go-to Thanksgiving clap-back.
Literally No One
Sometimes in a conversation, we bring up things that are very specific to our personal interests or things that other people might not care to discuss. For example, apologizing for no reason or reenacting scenes from High School Musical unprompted. It happens to the best of us, and the "Literally No One" meme encapsulated that feeling perfectly.
Gonna Tell My Kids
It was towards the end of the year, but it was one of the best. "Gonna Tell My Kids" was basically a meme where it would have an image accompanied by a wildly inaccurate description of what the user was going to tell their kids. So, telling future kids that Brendon Urie in a top hat was actually Abraham Lincoln is comedy gold.
Rise and Shine
In a YouTube video where she gives a tour of her cosmetic brand's headquarters, Kylie Jenner decided to belt out a little tune to wake up her daughter, Stormi. Some internet users were very confused about why she decided to sing, others decided to seize the perfect meme opportunity and created autotune recordings and voice overlays, the most popular being Kylie's "audition" for The Voice.
Ight Imma Head Out
There's been plenty of times where someone says something so weird, mean, or crazy that we've just wanted to leave the situation altogether. This screenshot of Spongebob getting out of his chair describes that feeling to a T.
My Area 51 Alien
In September, there was a viral movement to raid Area 51. As a result, a lot of people took to Twitter and Instagram to joke about what it would be like if they brought back an alien from the raid. Most of the memes consisted of introducing the alien to human things, such as dancing and Wendy's 4 for $4 meals.
These only scratch the surface of some of the best jokes from this year, which leaves social media users everywhere eager for the next big meme trend.
