Everyone has that one person who just gets them. In Grey's Anatomy, Christina and Meredith refer to each other as each other's "person."
I think we all have our "person." And sometimes, that person truly changes your life.
My "person" is my best friend. And she's truly my other half. My best friend is the best thing that has ever happened to me for a few reasons.
1. We haven't known each other since diapers. In all the books, it seems as if a best friend has to be someone you've known since you were young, someone you grew up with and have done everything with since preschool. But, that isn't always the case. Sometimes, you don't meet that person until high school. Sometimes, you go through a bunch of best friends before you find the one you know is going to stick around. You have to take the time to learn the other's past, their hopes, their dreams, their fears. You have to put the effort in to find them. It requires more work, more effort, but in the end, you've found your soulmate
2. She's the twin I never had but always wanted. Ever since I was a little girl, I always thought it would be so cool to have a twin. Of course, I knew I'd never get that, but finding her is the closest I'll ever get to one. And let me just say, it's pretty darn close. We're obnoxious together. We literally finish each other's sentences. We know when the other is going to pause and are able to jump in and add our own comments without interrupting. We text each other the same thing at the same time, even if we're 150 miles apart at schools. We badly sing the same songs in the exact same way. We like the same music, the same books, the same places and obsess over the same things. You don't see one of us without the other.
3. She's been there through it all in just a short time. We've been close for just a couple years, but during those years, we've been through more than I could ever describe. She's always the one to cheer me up when I'm down. She gets me through the friend drama, the boy issues, and everything in between. She's there at whatever hour of the day I need her. She's the pick-me-up that even coffee can't be. The confidence booster, the reality check, and the partner in crime.
4. She gives me the reality check that no one else will. She tells me when to cut my crap or when I'm being selfish or not listening. She's not afraid to call me out on things. She knows when it's right to say something and when I should just let it go. She knows the person I'm capable of being and, when I fall short of that person, won't stop until I get there, no matter how much of a reality check is required. She tells it to me like it is, like no one else will do.
5. She's my better half. She's the more patient of us. She has the quirkiness and and is nice to everyone she meets. She's not quick to judge and is always there to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. She's beautiful and funny and smart. She's the most genuine person I've ever met. She's everything that I can't be. I strive to be like her and so I look up to her in every single way.
6. We're 110% ourselves around each other. We're not shy about who we really are. We don't have to hide what we like to feel like we're able to fit in. We don't have to try around the other because we simply don't care. We sing loudly in the car to the same weird music, dance crazily together, share our weird habits. There's no pretending, no hiding.
7. She's my number one fan. She's always the one I can count on to be proud of me for accomplishing something or meeting a goal. She's always the first person I tell about things that go my way because I know she'll be genuinely excited for me. She cheers me on, whether it's right by my side or via FaceTime or text. It's a mutual understanding; we cheer for each other all the time, in everything we do.
I clearly have a lot to be thankful for, and my best friend is the top of that list. Thanks for being everything I can't be and for helping me to be a better person. Thank you for teaching me what friendship is really about and for being the perfect best friend. You're my person. You're truly the best thing that's ever happened to me.
