Ever since I was a kid I have always had a hard time sitting through American films, more specifically Hollywood modern films. Just ask my parents and anyone who has ever watched a film with me. I will end up talking and not be intrigued by it due to the generic trope and the constant repeat of the same plot in every movie ever made. But as I got into middle school I was introduced to foreign films, and from then on I was hooked and my attention was held captive the entire time, and not one word was uttered from my lips. The cinematography, plot, characters, actors, and script will make you wish that Hollywood was no more.

Love. The entire plot of the film surrounds the aspect of love, and what it can do to a person's mind and how they perceive themselves. It follows a married textile foreman, Vital, and his boss's daughter, Alix, who begin a torrid love affair that ends up breaking Vital's already dwindling marriage. While all of this is occurring between these two, the employees at the factory begin to understand why the boss's daughter is there, and the strain of it all creates a tension that inevitably ends sadly for the employees.

MY MOTHER THE MERMAID

Still from My Mother the Mermaid (Ineogongju)http://asianwiki.com/My_Mother_the_Mermaid

This beautiful South Korean film dives into the world of learning what is like to see from our parent's perspective, while also adding magic realism into the mix that is time traveling. Na-young lives with her emotionally detached father, and her boisterous and cynical mother. As she continues to live with them and grow up she begins to see that she is turning into her mother, something that she isn't too proud of. One day her father vanishes without a trace, and instead of getting on her flight, Na-young instead travels to her father's hometown. But out of nowhere she is transported back in time and witnesses the beginning of the relationship between her parents, as well as witnessing the trials, heartbreaks, and celebrations before she is suddenly back in the present time.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
