2015 has been a great year for music. A wide variety of artists have released some of their best music within the past eight months. Here is a list of ten great albums that you should listen to and enjoy.
10. "The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam"
"The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam" by Thundercat is a dreamy lush album/large EP. Led by bassist Stephen Bruner, "The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam" gives the listener an enjoyable and smooth ride. With thick bass sounds and tight harmonies, Stephen Bruner preforms to his audience with a solid sound. With tracks like "Them Changes" and "Song for the Dead," complex, funk-inspired riffs push through your speakers. Thundercat's "The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam" is a great album to listen to if you enjoy a fusion of jazz, funk and electronic music.
9. "Ryans Adams Live At Carnegie Hall"
Ryan Adam's latest recording, "Live At Carnegie Hall," provides a stripped-down version of the Ryan Adams sound. This extensive 40 track recording of Ryan Adams performing over two nights of live set material demonstrates the soft and personal side of this artist. Most songs only include Adams and his acoustic guitar. Ryan Adams shows his folk side on this album, and you will not be let down if you enjoy simple guitar and personal lyrics.
8. "What For?"
Toro Y Moi's fifth full-length album "What For?" is an up-beat collection of songs that break away from the band's former chillwave sound. This guitar-lead album experiments with funky bass lines and sharp synthesizers. Front man Chaz Bundick reveals that he can create a diverse range of music for his fans. "What For?" is a great summertime album that feels like a throw-back to the 70s.
7. "Multi-Love"
Unknown Mortal Orchestra's third full-length record "Multi-Love" reveals the band's shift towards a pop sound. UMO incorporates more electronic and diverse sounds on this record in order to create a lighter sound. Songs like "Can't Keep Checking My Phone," and, "Ur Life One Night," reveal this band's ability to create groovy eccentric sounds. "Multi-Love" is another great album for your summer collection.
6. "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper"
Panda Bear released the album "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper" this past January. Panda Bear is the solo project birthed from the band Animal Collective. This experimental electronic album expands on Animal Collective's breakthrough record, "Merriweather Post Pavilion." With repetitive beats and bright synthesizers, "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper" presents a hypnotic and mesmerizing work of art from start to finish.
5. "Gliss Riffer"
Dan Deacon's sixth album, "Gliss Riffer," takes the listener on a weird electronic ride. Deacon's computerized voice and melodic synthesizer lines transport his audience to another world. This upbeat record pushes into a strange universe of odd lyrics and dreamy chords. Tracks like "When I Was Done Dying" and "Feel the Lightning" give a great deal of emotional expression, while "Take it to the Max" provides a trance-inducing sound. "Gliss Riffer" is an album worth your time.
4. "Carrie & Lowell"
Sufjan Stevens goes back to his folk roots with his latest album, "Carrie & Lowell." This record gives the listener a deep insight into Steven's relationship with his late Mother. Universal themes, involving broken family and relationships, are placed on top of Steven's soothing acoustic guitar and light keyboards. The tracks "Fourth of July" and "Should've Known Better" are great examples of this album's emotional power. While this album is full of sadness, the feelings behind this work of art are real and heart-felt.
3. "In Colour"
The debut album of Jamie XX, "In Colour" does not disappoint. This former Dj and producer of indie powerhouse the XX unlocks an amazing collection of dance and electronic tracks. If you're looking for something to put on at a party, see what people think of the tracks "Gosh" and "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)." Jamie XX takes the simplicity of The XX and expands on it further than his previous band could have ever gone. Don't miss out on this colorful and fun album.
2. "Sound and Color"
With their second record out, Alabama Shakes has proven to be a powerful and likeable band. "Sound and Color" has a strong track list, and almost every song on this album demonstrates the skill and talent that this band wields. With a fusion of southern blues and alternative rock, songs such as "Gimme All Your Love" and "Future People" hit a home run. This album does not mess around, and you will not be let down.
1. "I Love You, Honeybear"
This list would not be complete without Father John Misty's second album, "I Love You, Honeybear." This unique album gives an amazing picture of what real love and relationships look like. The use of satire and humor on this album provide an incredibly enjoyable listen. The songs "The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apartment" and "Bored In The USA" exhibit the intelligent satire and humor lead-singer Josh Tillman is capable of. Father John Misty's songs get better with every listen, because something new can be found in each track. "I Love You, Honeybear" is by far the best album of 2015 so far.
